five questions to answer:

1) what type of setting do you perform nursing? med-surg, with neuro focus

2) what type of nursing care do you perform - team nursing, primary nursing, or other? primary

2) how many patients do you care for usually per shift? 4-6

3) what is the maximum amount of patients do you care for? 6

4) what do you do when you feel overwhelmed? we have a very supportive environment where i work. if i need help, i ask!

Specializes in Med Surg, Ortho.

1. ortho/stroke - medsurg overflow

2. Primary

3. 4-6, no more than 6, but usually only 4-5, we have a very busy floor.

4. 6

5. Call for help from my fellow employees, when they need help I'm there for them and

they do the same for me. Also think to myself, there are 12 hours in this shift and

there's about 8-9 more hours left (to get things done) usually at the time I'm feeling overwhelmed.

1) acute rehab/med-surg

2) primary

3) 5-8 pts per shift

4) 8

5) Have not been overwhelmed YET. I came from LTC/sub-acute care (the "sub" part was a joke) where I had 24-32 pts per shift. I did 3 12 hour shifts per week. 5-8 pts has not freaked me out at all, but I know some day soon that will change, its just the odds I guess.

1) What type of setting do you perform nursing? I work on a med-surg floor that has a focus on ortho, neuro, and uro post-ops.

2) What type of nursing care do you perform - team nursing, primary nursing, or other? Primary, but there's a lot of teamwork

2) How many patients do you care for usually per shift? Nights, 3-4, with or without 1 aid. We have up to 25 pts on our unit, so even with an aid we really still have to do our own work, or get help from other LPNs/RNs

3) What is the maximum amount of patients do you care for? 5 is the most I've cared for, and that has only been once in 6 months. There have actually been nights I have only had 2, but that's only been a few times

4) What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? I delegate to the aids more than usual and ask for help. Then I just prioritize. I also let my pts know there are several things I have to do, and that it's not that I have forgotten about them, but that it may be awhile before I can get in to do a lot. Then I make sure immediate needs are met (water, bathroom, pain) and can usually come back before they need anything and need a call light. I don't like anyone to think that I've forgotten about them.

I think this is a great thread....and I'm wondering if people would include the size of their hospital and city. THANKS
