How long did it take you to complete your prerequisites?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all,

I am 45 years old, and finally taking the first step in realizing my dream of becoming a nurse! I will be taking my very first prerequisite course (Nursing-Chemistry) in January. I was advised to take one class a semester to have a competitive GPA. I am curious to know how long it took you to complete your prerequisites? Are there any courses you can recommend that would be good to take together?

I am in S. Florida and will be going to Broward College.

Thank You!!

It just depends on if you go part time or full time or take semesters off. I've been going to college on and off since 2004 and this fall is my last semester of pre reqs. I took a break between 2005 and 2009. I have 108 credits thus far & should have close to 200 when I graduate with my BSN lol. I changed my major several times over the years which is why I took so many "un-nursing related" courses.

Specializes in Oncology.

PLEASE NOTE: THE BELOW CLASSES ONLY REQUIRED FOR THE BSN!! I thought I needed them for the AS degree.

Additional General Education Courses Required

*MCB 2010 Microbiology 3

*MCB 2010L Microbiology Lab 1

*HSC 1149 Pharmacology 2

*MTB 1370 Math for Health Related Professions 1

Hi Julibyrd, congrats on going after your dreams. I am also a student at BC and looking to start the nursing program in January 2014 at Central/ South Campus, still undecided. I just wanted to let you know that Micro w/ lab is now a required pre-req for the program. The other two classes posted above will be taken in the 1st semester with Nursing process 1 & 2, so these are classes you will have to take for the ADN. CHM1032 is supposedly no longer a pre-req but you will have to take CHM1032 prior to taking Micro. You were right about what you stated about CHM1032 lab not being a pre- req for the ADN program.

I also wanted to say you're making a smart move by taking one science course with it's lab every semester.

It took me 2 quarters to finish everything except A&P. I basically crammed everything which was good because I could focus mainly on A&P which was killer!!!!

I worked full-time while taking classes and I typically took 2 classes each semester and no more than 3 classes at a time. It has taken me 2 years to finish my prereqs. I wanted to hurry and rush them up, but my nursing advisor warned me to take it slow and do it right the first time! :D[/quote']

I did the same thing. Worked full time while doing prereqs, it took me 2 years as well.

Hello,

It took me 1 year to finish my prereqs BUT I took 5+ classes at a time @(^^)@ not recommended! It was hard and time consuming! I'm now ready to apply to Lpn at Wright College in Chicago. Hope I get accepted as I don't feel tooooo confident about my Teas Test V score ? but hoping for the best

Congratulations on pursuing your dream of becoming a nurse. I too am an older student starting on my second career. I found that taking the anatomy and physiology courses were more time consuming and can be paired with a less busy class like psychology or nutrition. Good luck!

I am 48 and realized I wanted to leave my job and get into a Nursing Program, only to find out that its an impossible dream. I'm taking only 1 class at a time after work, but its a 20 hour commitment going to lecture twice a week, a lab, and Im logging something like 15 hours a week in homework too. I don't have time to fix computer problems, work out, or cook healthy meals anymore, and am completely MISERABLE. And I have to do this for 6 semesters (3 Years?) only to not know if I'll even get into a nursing program? And I can't leave my job to focus on school just to find out I can't get in after taking all my prerequisites either. I am beside myself. Does anyone have any ideas, are there any other paths to becoming a nurse?

Will be 2 years.

Program interested in has 8 pre reqs even with my previous degree love to take more, but cost only able to take 1 a semester. Feel at this rate it will be too late.

I started May 2014 and will be done May 2016...hopefully with a conditional acceptance. I work full time and didn't feel comfortable taking two classes at a time... And it was the right decision for me! I also took a semester off to get married, and then dropped a Micro course before it even started. I was supposed to be done around this time.

20 weeks in total with a 3 week gap in between the summer and fall semesters. Took them three at a time online with Hopkins

hopefulhdr, I am planning on taking 4 pre req courses online at JHU this coming february. I am starting with Anatomy and Microbiology with labs. How did you handle the textbooks? Did you buy them from other sources or did you get McGraw-Hill connect as they recommend? Did you feel like you needed textbooks?
