No start date due to covid-Need some advice/insight into my current situation
Hello all, I'm an FNP who graduated back in August 2019. I finally landed a job at an FQHC in NYC after several months of grueling job hunting. I had an interview with the organization in December 2019, received a job offer, and accepted the offer within the same week. I applied for NY licenses in November 2019 and got all my licenses and certifications required to start work (NY-RN, NP, NPI, DEA, Medicare/Medicaid, NYS Medicaid and etc) by Late April 2020. I have been fully credentialed and completed the internal credentialing. I was supposed to start onboarding/training when I completed the credentialing but my employer is unable to give me a start date due to the current situation and pandemic in NYC. They further explained that they are currently unable to provide a safe environment for their new hires to onboard and new providers to train, which is understandable. They are evaluating and reassessing the situation every week and they will keep me updated as things change. It's been 10 months since I graduated and I still have not started my career as an FNP, which makes me incredibly anxious about the lack of income, uncertain future, and the fear of potentially going back to job hunting. What's the right career move here? Do I wait till things clear up and hear back from my employer? Also is there anyone in a similar situation? I would love to hear about it. Thanks.

Nurse Corps Scholarship 2017-2018
Per supporting document - proof of citizenship, does anyone know what qualifies for lawful permanent residents? the application guideline specified the documents for citizens but not for lawful permanent residents. Does permanent resident card suffice as the supporting document?? I have never been able to reach the call center. Thanks

Nurse Corps Scholarship 2017-2018
Really odd that Nurse Corps Scholarship hasn't opened yet. It opened on March 6th last year, I think.

PNPplease, When you said "Not being able to get a nursing degree at the end of the pre-specialty year," do you mean not having a BSN + RN licensure? You do get RN licensure after the pre-specialty year and it is a requirement to progress onto the Specialty year. And having harder time finding a job as NP without RN experience (BSN/ADN etc) is really up for a debate. I think this is one of the most debated topic at this forum. Depending on the kinds of job you apply, previous RN experience may be relevant and may not. Remember, working as a BSN/ADN RN is a different type of trade/job/duty compared to working as a nurse practitioner. "Working as an RN after we get our MSN." I assume you mean completing the program with RN licensure and passing the national board exam for your NP specialty. There is a thread about this topic and I believe it is a liability on your part to practice as an RN when you have NP certification. You are legally required to practice up to your full extent of your education and certification. If you do work as an RN with NP certification, you are putting yourself in a situation where your employer doesn't allow you to practice to the full extent of your education and certification when you are legally obligated to practice the full scope of NP.

I had same conundrum last cycle but there are many external scholarship opportunities you can apply for. Mind you that 115,000 is a rough estimate of the tuition. Fin aid previously sent out an email with financial aid information and estimate based on the previous year's costs. The estimate for pre-specialty year (non-RN) was $62,045. This cost includes cost/credit, other fees, not including your cost of living expenses. The estimate for specialty year (PMHNP) was $57,968. So just tuitions and fees, you will have to pay $120,013. I am sure you got the internal scholarship, which typically offsets 10% of the tuition, so it'll come out to be about $108,013 for the duration of the program. The number does look intimidating but a lot of external scholarship opportunities are still available and do spend time until the school starts to offset the tuition. VUSN website has an excellent list of external scholarships, after you celebrate your achievement of being admitted to VUSN!

Based on previous years' threads, people have been getting mixed responses from the admission regarding the status of their applications. Some were told the generic "decisions will be out by mid February/early March," and some were told whether their applications were still in review or not. While typing this comment, I received an email from Kristie Smith-VUSN financial aid coordinator, about financial aid information packet. I believe this is one of the routine emails sent out to everyone who's interested in one of VUSN programs. Groundhog day is about a week away and I am curious to see what the groundhog will say about this year's spring and climate change. Oh and the decisions from VUSN.

cn4207, It'd be fantastic if we do hear anything back this month! On the other hand, based on previous years' threads and discussions, FNP applicants don't typically have interviews. I am also curious to see what other admission personnel would say about the matter, like Bernie, Cheryl, Paddy and etc. I haven't heard about or talked to Megan at Admissions before.

Pre-specialty FNP applicant here. Last time I talked to Bernie from admissions (Nov 9th), us lucky FNP applicants will learn our fate around mid/end of February. I am sure time will fly by and we will be finding out about our admission status in the near future. Let's hope they spare us by dishing out decisions a week or two earlier than they indicated.

Hi everyone, I submitted the completed application about a week before for pre-specialty entry MSN-FNP program for Fall 2017! This is my 2nd time applying to Vandy and I am re-applying this cycle for a different specialty. I was admitted for their AGPCNP program last cycle but I decided to defer and re-apply for FNP program. Good luck everyone!

Vanderbilt MSN 2017
So I recently found out that I got accepted to my state school's ABSN program (UTHSC-Memphis) which starts in January of 2017. I am very conflicted here because I won't find out about Vandy until late February or early March 2017, based on what Dean Peerman said during the Open House. The ABSN program is as appealing as the Vanderbilt's accelerated program to me because it costs me less than half of what I would pay for Vanderbilt's Pre-specialty portion, graduate in time to be ready to apply for Vanderbilt's direct entry program (for those with BSN/RN). However, I will have to go through the grueling application process all over again. In addition, if i opt to attend the ABSN program, I will be too far from my SO, who's planning on being in Durham, NC for her graduate school. I feel it is at least doable for us to meet half way between Nashville and Durham, compared to between Memphis and Durham. If I decide not to attend the ABSN program, I am left with nothing but Vanderbilt. If I don't get in to Vanderbilt, I have no alternative (this is my fault). However, I am a bit optimistic that I have a pretty good chance because I was accepted to the program last cycle but decided to defer due to personal reasons. But then, the fear of the consequence of potentially being left with no choice outweighs my optimism. Anyone in similar situation? Asking for some insights.

Hi NPToBe1, Here is the link to the info. regarding internal scholarships. Internal Scholarship Opportunities | MSN Admissions | Admissions | School of Nursing | Vanderbilt University Based on my experience from the previous cycle, I know that they offer a scholarship based on your GRE score with an acceptance letter. If you have any other question that's not on VUSN website, let me know!
