How long did it take you to complete your prerequisites?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all,

I am 45 years old, and finally taking the first step in realizing my dream of becoming a nurse! I will be taking my very first prerequisite course (Nursing-Chemistry) in January. I was advised to take one class a semester to have a competitive GPA. I am curious to know how long it took you to complete your prerequisites? Are there any courses you can recommend that would be good to take together?

I am in S. Florida and will be going to Broward College.

Thank You!!

If those are the classes you have to take, then it will probably take you no less than 3 semesters...I'd say ideally 4....but up to 5. I started my prereqs this past summer and I should be finishing either this spring or this summer (depending on when I can take my last class). I am taking A&P 1 by itself right now, and I am kind of thankful it is my only class!

I started in Spring 2009 by taking one class at a time. Later, I switched to full-time classes. I kind of went on and off and completed all my pre-reqs by Summer 2011. It is true that you want to concentrate on making the best grade possible b/c nursing school competition is stiff. I think it is good that you are starting at one class. It also depends on your other obligations like work and family. Do you have to take a lab with the chemistry class? You might want to make sure that they are co-requisites.

Hey! Im starting my pre reqs at BC too! What campus? I am starting with my Eng Comp and A & P 1 and i plan on taking a & p 2 and Chem over the summer so that way ill be finished when fall comes around i willl be able to apply to the nursing program! Maybe ill see you! I wisdh you luck, Feels good to know people will be starting around teh same time as me lol.

Great! I will be at the Central Campus. Good luck to you as well! We should stay in touch! :)

I worked full-time while taking classes and I typically took 2 classes each semester, and no more than 3 classes at a time. It has taken me 2 years to finish my prereqs. I wanted to hurry and rush them up, but my nursing advisor warned me to take it slow and do it right the first time! :D

Although I would like to hurry things up, I believe slow and steady wins the race!!! :)

No lab required for Chemistry since it's for my ADN. But it would be required for a BSN.

Specializes in CNA/LPN.

Congratulations on your first step! Honestly, it's whatever you are more comfortable with doing! :) One course per semester is ideal for some people, while two or more is more their style. It took me three semesters to complete mine. I took two courses a semester. It helped with time, for the fact that my LPN program only requires five pre-reqs for selection!

You'll be just fine, just don't take on more than you can handle, you do want to keep a competitive GPA! ;)

Thanks for all the replies. I went and got my student id and parking permit. It felt so good to be back on a campus! I haven't been on one since 1987! lol. But anyway, saw my advisor too. She said once I am finished with Chemistry, I should take AP 1 with lab next, then AP 2 with lab. Then I take the HCA course and study for the Hesi. Once all is said and done, I should be ready to apply to NS in May of 2013.

Thank you all for your replies! I already have an AA Degree in Liberal Arts & Social Sciences. So only need the "core" prerequisites:

* CHM 1032 Chemistry for Health Science 3

* BSC 1085 Human Anatomy & Physiology I 3

* BSC 1085L Human Anatomy & Physiology Lab 1

* BSC 1086 Human Anatomy & Physiology II 3

* BSC 1086L Human Anatomy & Physiology II Lab 1

Total Semester Credit Hours 14

*HCP 0001 Health Career Core (75.0 Contact Hours): This course is not calculated in the grade point average but must be completed prior to submitting an application to the Nursing Program. (Students may be eligible for a waiver if they have a current Florida or national license in another direct patient-care, health care profession).

Additional General Education Courses Required

*MCB 2010 Microbiology 3

*MCB 2010L Microbiology Lab 1

*HSC 1149 Pharmacology 2

*MTB 1370 Math for Health Related Professions 1

PLEASE NOTE: THE BELOW CLASSES ONLY REQUIRED FOR THE BSN!! I thought I needed them for the AS degree.

Hello I'm new at this, I'm a recent graduate of high school, but I'm not very familiar of how this sistem works. I'm planing on going into nursing, but I don't know how to get my prerequisites for nurse, can these be taken online? How do I apply to get those prerequisites done. please I need lots of help.

go to the college near you and get the necessary info

Took me 5 years because I didn't go full time and I had to take time off here and there. I had 2 children during pre-reqs (had 3 before I started).
