Might seem like a silly question, but for the A&O pts who aren't incontinent, it puts you in a weird situation to just come out and say that you need to see their backside to check for pressure ulcer areas.
How do you make the situation less uncomfortable?
This is the one field where this question in not inappropriate.
I do not THINK my nurses have ever evaluated by hind-quarters. But who knows, you guys have come up with some very sneaky ways to do it.
But then again, to my memory, the longest I have been in was 3 days, so maybe it was not needed.
Oh, I'm sure you've had your bottom checked.........and yes, we can be sneaky when we need to be.:wink2:
As a number of people have said, it's not really so difficult to get this done; you just make it part of the overall physical assessment and explain to the patient why it's necessary. It's a matter of being professional, providing privacy, and not acting like it's a big deal.
Funny you ask. I had a nurse ask me the same question. She's relatively new, and just felt weird asking a 40 something to pull his pants down so she could check for redness and any beginnings of pressure ulcers.
I would just state what you're doing and the reason for doing it. Honestly, if a nurse asked to see my bottom at 28 yo, I would decline. I know it's not red or have bed sores.
