How do you get someone to show you their butt?

Might seem like a silly question, but for the A&O pts who aren't incontinent, it puts you in a weird situation to just come out and say that you need to see their backside to check for pressure ulcer areas.

How do you make the situation less uncomfortable?

I had my answer before I clicked on the link. Might as well tell you. I usually take them out for a meal and some good wine...

This is the one field where this question in not inappropriate.

I do not THINK my nurses have ever evaluated by hind-quarters. But who knows, you guys have come up with some very sneaky ways to do it. ;)

But then again, to my memory, the longest I have been in was 3 days, so maybe it was not needed.

Oh, I'm sure you've had your bottom checked.........and yes, we can be sneaky when we need to be.:wink2:

As a number of people have said, it's not really so difficult to get this done; you just make it part of the overall physical assessment and explain to the patient why it's necessary. It's a matter of being professional, providing privacy, and not acting like it's a big deal.

Good question!

For a new admit, I will ask if they have any scars or skin rash or irritation in their private area...such as rash, infection(ie, lady partsl), or C-section scar, angio groin scar. Then it is more of a physical exam and seems less threatening.

My question is "How do you get someone to NOT show you their butt?" :lol2:

Honestly, for A&O walkie-talkies, I don't ask. I don't need to see it. Most of my pts are completely helpless anyway, so I see their butt regardless of whether I want to or not.:crying2: Just another one of the perks of the job.:p

With some patients, it's how do you get them to NOT show you their butt.:)

Ha! I posted before I read this whole thread. Great minds think alike!:yeah:

Funny you ask. I had a nurse ask me the same question. She's relatively new, and just felt weird asking a 40 something to pull his pants down so she could check for redness and any beginnings of pressure ulcers.

I would just state what you're doing and the reason for doing it. Honestly, if a nurse asked to see my bottom at 28 yo, I would decline. I know it's not red or have bed sores.
