How to get Maryland Licensure, moving to MD

Published

How do you apply for a license in MD? I am from Illinois and plan on taking NCLEX in MD in June (Graduate in May 06 in IL). I was on the MD BON homepage but it really doesn't seem like it has too much. if anyone knows all help is appreciated.. Thanks

wow! that doesn't sound very good. maybe i haven't received my application because of this weird out-of-state attitude ? at this point i'm thinking i may have to go to one of their offices (not the towson one!) just to get an application.

i think you can get a license the same day you apply if you walk into their office.

MD is no different than any state. Paperwork takes time no matter were you are. If your a new grad they have to verify some things, it won't take that long to do. If you've got a license it takes less time.

And no just adding criminal history checks doesn't mean that someone without a criminal hx can't get a license. It's just to many people lie on their applications and the BON is responsible for the safty of hte residents of MD. If your honest and it isn't a felony, you can still get a license.

If you get to the BON office early enough in the morning the wiat isnt' to long. Or at least it didn't used to be. the nice thing is that once you get ytour license, it's easy to renew. 1 min online and bingo your renewed.

hi i went to maryland in 2002 as traveler, went to resitertown,md.got my license in one day as walk through just need to have new passport photo which there was place in mall taking them.took my virginia license, drivers license, birth certificate with me wasn't hard at all the wait wasn't bad either couple hours.hope this helps.

Ok. I finally got a chance to go to the MD BON on Patterson Ave near Reisterstown. It wasn't bad at all. I got an application for licensure by exam and then I headed to the CJIS at the other end of the shopping center to have my fingerprints done ($62). They say to go there because they do it electronically and they receive the results faster. After standing in line for over an hour, they did the standard ink fingerprints and told me they take just as long to process as the electronic ones.

Now all I have to do is get the director of my nursing program to sign my application and a passport photo and send in the application with my $100 check and the fingerprinting receipt. I think they might also require some documentation from the school like transcripts but I have to verify that because the instructions were not clear.

From what I can see and I'm in the process of sitting for boards in NC. As soon as I relocate to MD with my NC license (NC is part of the multistate compact) I must apply for my MD endorsement within 30 days. I'm hoping that process is not too bureaucratic but I am not holding my breath. I'm tempted to maintain my residence in NC just to avoid having to get a MD endorsement.

MBON need to hire people

Ruby,

I know what ya mean there!!! I work at a federal facility which meant that I did not have to have a Maryland license to work. I wanted to pick up some agency hours and took all my paperwork to the BON.......I sat there for quite some time before getting everything completed and out the door!!

I feel your pain! I was in your shoes 6 months ago.

Do you live in MD or withing a 5 hour drive? I would recommend going to the office and picking up an application. They will NEVER answer the phone and if they respond to your emails you will be very lucky. They are incredibly understaffed and blame a state hiring freeze.

If you can go there and pick up an application go as early as possible. And bring $70 cash with you so that you can get your finger printing done at the other side of the shopping center in the same trip (it's between $65-68). There is a check cashing place across the street from the MBON where you can get a money order for the fingerprinting, I'd bring cash to be safe. MBON told me they only take money orders but I'm not positive that is true. The wait at the fingerprinting place can be very long so be prepared to spend a few hours in line. The information on where to go is in the application packet.

Let me know if I can give you any more advice. It took me 6 weeks from submitting my application to get my ATT. They also lost my transcripts so I had to FedEx them, it was a lot of fun. It was quite an ordeal! But at least we only have to go through it once. Once you've got the license you can just renew online or by mail!

Good luck!

You can get your passport photo anytime but the fingerprinting should wait til you get the application. The instructions on how to obtain the fingerprinting are included in the application packet.

I'm from the Philippines .. I submitted my application for NCLEX last year and CGFNS has just issued a CES report 2 weeks ago. I have already finished IELTS. Now I don't know what happens. Been trying to email everyday for 2 weeks now and calling overseas but can't get thru Donna Aversa's voice mail. I don't know what's next? Any advice?
