I was in the same situation about 2 weeks ago. As a new nurse (and a shy person) I had no idea what to react and the MD made me feel like crap even though I was RIGHT. He had placed an order that was incorrect, I paged him "Why was that ordered?" and he responded "Orders are written for a reason and I don't need my orders questioned!" I was so shocked I could not even respond. I have never been talked to like that in a professional setting before and I can't believe it is tolerated. Isn't our job as nurses to know why each order we carry out is written? Otherwise why did we even need a college degree? It's hard to imagine that nursing has come so far in terms of getting respect from MDs but I just can't believe we are still being yelled at. There are some great MDs out there that treat us with respect but the bad apples make it hard to remember the good ones. After going through so many classes during nursing orientation, why aren't all the residents and interns required to attend the same inservices on professionalism and sensitivity?

Thanks, crb! All the nurses on my unit keep saying it takes at lest 6 months before you start getting the swing of it. I have no choice but to believe them after 4 years of classes and nursing school there's no quitting yet. I knew it was going to be hard but nothing really prepares you for what it's really like to run around like a mad woman for 13hrs only to be told you missed this and you missed that. All the little things that you don't want to miss because that means you're a bad nurse. It sucks not being able to provide your patients with the quality of care they deserve. It just seems impossible to get all the urgent things done (like meds, vitals, assessments, d/c, admissions, etc.) and still pay attention to the little things. Here's to hoping it really does get better!

Wow! 8 patients! I'm a new grad, too. I just got an extra week of orientation and have only 2 weeks left. At my hospital we have 4-6 patients and I'm having trouble just juggling that. I don't think any more would be safe. I think most Magnet hospitals keep their ratios 6 and under for med/surg. It's so much more than I was prepared for working as a nurse extern. But everyone keeps telling me that it takes about 6 months before you feel like you have a handle on things. I just look around at the experienced nurses around me and hope that I can whisk through a day like them someday.

You can get your passport photo anytime but the fingerprinting should wait til you get the application. The instructions on how to obtain the fingerprinting are included in the application packet.

I feel your pain! I was in your shoes 6 months ago. Do you live in MD or withing a 5 hour drive? I would recommend going to the office and picking up an application. They will NEVER answer the phone and if they respond to your emails you will be very lucky. They are incredibly understaffed and blame a state hiring freeze. If you can go there and pick up an application go as early as possible. And bring $70 cash with you so that you can get your finger printing done at the other side of the shopping center in the same trip (it's between $65-68). There is a check cashing place across the street from the MBON where you can get a money order for the fingerprinting, I'd bring cash to be safe. MBON told me they only take money orders but I'm not positive that is true. The wait at the fingerprinting place can be very long so be prepared to spend a few hours in line. The information on where to go is in the application packet. Let me know if I can give you any more advice. It took me 6 weeks from submitting my application to get my ATT. They also lost my transcripts so I had to FedEx them, it was a lot of fun. It was quite an ordeal! But at least we only have to go through it once. Once you've got the license you can just renew online or by mail! Good luck!

Congrats! We did it! That test was very evil! What's the point of making us feel like an idiots? Why not just throw us a few bones to make us feel like we're doing alright?! It doesn't seem right that now matter how well you do, you're still gonna feel like you failed no matter what. Anyway, it's over now! Good luck to you guys. Don't worry so much about it. As long as you did well in school and are doing well on review questions you'll be fine. The national pass rate is 85%! Remembering that helped me out through those 48 hours of waiting.

That's what I keep thinking, dmn. I always heard that if it's hard and you get 75 then you passed. Did you try the website for the NY board of nursing?

Thanks for the confidence, Cyndie! It definitely feels good to know I'm not the only one who walked out of there and wanted to cry. It was so hard. I expected it to be more like the review questions where at least half of them I could answer with confidence.

I took it yesterday with 75 questions too. Lots of meds I had never heard of. No calculations. I didn't even get many questions where ABCs, Maslow, Nursing Process helped like all the strategies say. It was hard! I was drinking wine last night too and that helped. Today I'm doing laundry and cleaning cabinets! Anything to keep me from checking the BON website more than once per hour! Good luck!

Yeah, I've paid Pearson Vue the $200 and submitted everything to the BON. I'm just waiting to receive the ATT. I emailed the BON to make sure my application is complete with no word back yet. I think they're just really slow. I never received an application by mail which I requested multiple times, I ended up having to go all the way to their office to pick one up (and I live 3 states away!). I'll try calling on Tuesday. I'm still waiting for my ATT from MD Board of Nursing. I submitted everything, they cashed my check, they should have received my transcripts the 1st wk of Feb. I don't know why it takes so long for ATT. I'm registered with Pearson Vue so I expect they'll email me as soon as I get ATT. I check the website every couple days just to make sure. Can it really take 4-6wks to get ATT?

Ok. I finally got a chance to go to the MD BON on Patterson Ave near Reisterstown. It wasn't bad at all. I got an application for licensure by exam and then I headed to the CJIS at the other end of the shopping center to have my fingerprints done ($62). They say to go there because they do it electronically and they receive the results faster. After standing in line for over an hour, they did the standard ink fingerprints and told me they take just as long to process as the electronic ones. Now all I have to do is get the director of my nursing program to sign my application and a passport photo and send in the application with my $100 check and the fingerprinting receipt. I think they might also require some documentation from the school like transcripts but I have to verify that because the instructions were not clear.
