How do you deal with dizziness and syncope?

Published

What are some interventions you usually use to deal with syncope and dizziness? I know checking the blood sugar, and vital signs should be the first you do. Then having the person lie flat and and letting them drink warm water, beef bouillon is another thing to do. What about you? What are your tips and tricks?

Do you put the boullion in the warm water? lol.....

And then add rice. Tastes delicious.

Lay them down, start an IV, get an EKG . Do q 15 minute vitals and neuro checks, if they were syncopal.. do not leave the bedside and page a doctor to the bedside stat.

BMP post boullion, I'm guessing Na+ out of whack. :D

Lord I hope so... couldn't imagine licking a boullion cube until it was gone..

Everytime I read this I crack up. I imagine Homer Simpson visualizing a boullion cube and licking it, saying, "Ummmm boullion cubes", and of course drooling.

This is a really odd question. For a nurse.

I read all this trying to figure out why this is being asked. And I have come to the conclusion that:

I want Chinese food

No idea what the warm water is about, but the boullion is probably about salt. Increasing salt intake is an option for people with orthostatic hypotension.

I work in the community so I teach people to sit up, wait. Put feet on the floor, wait. Put hands to thighs, stand up slowly.

I've heard they used to use broth in dialysis for our patients with symptomatic hypotension and cramps for the sodium.. but it's definitely not a current practice.

In our dialysis clinic we absolutely still use beef or chicken broth if pressures are too low post run.

Darn beat me to it. Is the pt in the ER? On another unit in the hospital? At the grocery store (hopefully in the soup/bouillon aisle)?
