How is the BSN entry level program at Nova Southeastern University?

Published

Hey I'm new to this site, and was just curious how Nova's nursing program is. I just got accepted into the Fall 2010 nursing program at the main campus in Davie. Any advice on how it is? Did you feel prepared when you took your NCLEX after completing the 27 month program? Would love to hear from anybody. I'm so excited and cant wait to start in august! :)

Guys I'm so nervous...

dont be nervous latisha you will be ok.... we are all nervous... shark nerves!!! we can only give the best and do the best we can... just like we fought to get in and we need to fight to stay in and pass those boards!

futurenutrire, no problem.... i am always here to help.. its easier when you have others helping you and not working against you.... we are all in this together and hopefully stay that way and see each other along the way!!! thank you for the congrats!! i am super excited and yet filled with anxiety and so many questions i just want my baptist packet to get the real facts in front of me.... nurse sharks!!!!!

-hello everyone i got accepted into nova's winter 2011 term (spring) and i cant thank you guys enough for starting this thread. it really is opening my eyes to how my way of schooling is about to change. i'm not starting until january but it already feels overwhelming. but i'm so excited!!

-hey newrn1986, do you have any tips for studying a&p? can you tell us what studying tips you have in general?

-i'm counting on you 2012 sharks give the next term advice since you guy are ahead of us if you have time. congrats again and good luck to everyone!

  • hello there futurenutrie, studying tip for a&p can be challenging sometimes, but not so much for anatomy (oh and you get to study with cadavers; not pigs like in previous classes);

  • the best way that worked for me was to tape record the class in case i miss anything during class, i would listen to it on the way to school before class and i would ask the professor questions in case i had any missunderstandings :uhoh3:;
  • at the end of the week i would get together with a group of friends and go over each power point slide; sometimes each person understands the same material different or writes notes that you might have missed, so study groups are a great way to learn from each other; a tip is to print your power points 3 slides per page so you can write next to them :)!!
  • do charts to compare stages, such us the stages of muscle contraction or nerve conduction;
  • at the end it all the depends on how you learn, i am consider myself nerdy :clown: so i would research something in all types of ways until i understood it, even if it took me 3 books :) and several websites; but at the end it was worth it; i got an award for doing great in class!
  • good luck!

oh as far as the iphone, back then no one had one :) so you guys have to ask if they let you use it as a pda, but don't worry you only need it until 2nd semester.

Thank you for NewRn for your tips, i was already printing out the 3 slides and adding a notes for my pre req's so atleast i know im doing something right lol one question i have is for the first chapter do they focus on the cell and physiology of it??? I want to get a head start and just refresh my memory because i know im cloudy in that area... Now i know to look up nerve and muscle contractions, so thank you for very much for your tips... I am going to invest in a tape recorder.

One question, on orientation do we actually meet the other classes like the class of January that just started and do we meet you guys that passed the boards??? I know that some schools do that and they I spoke to an individual that said that they introduce our class to the ones before us like the Jan term and then they announce the NCLEX scores of your class... is that true?? I know they may have changed things from when you started but i think orientation is pretty much straight forward.... just giving out info and stuff... they also told me that we all take Anatomy together... hmmmm.... i dunno if thats the case? All of us in an auditorium or something?

Anyways, any luck on the job scope??? Have u tried the new West kendall Baptist they havent opened up yet but its worth a try.... I hope your search turns out well and something comes up i know several ppl in your case that are struggling because of the economy, hopefully our graduating class it will lift... crossing my fingers... oh and to let you know I got accepted into the Baptist scholars... so im excited on costs lol... thank you again for you information... you have no idea how useful it is...

And about the PDA i did find out that you could use your Iphone... or Itouch whichever, it serves the same purpose... just need to always have the charger with you because Iphones eat up the battery life and imagine us using it for school... Hope to meet some of you this August... and Winter Term students... lets start a thread so we can share info and you guys can get the info from our class... makes it easier i think... or we could try something else... but GOOOOOOOO SHARKSSSSSSSS... i think i want a sharkie plush toy lol.... Im a nerd i know.. CLASS OF 2012 get ready!

hello there!

  • for physiology all of you guys will be together in a huge auditorium, before i left they were even putting your class together with the ultrasound students as well!!:uhoh3: i don't know if they are still doing that to you guys.
  • as for anatomy the lectures were together as well, but when you went to the cadaver lab, they separate you into two groups, so everyone has a chance to explore!
  • on orientation they do introduce some of the students from the class ahead, and sometimes even the senior class :); and yes they announce the current nclex passing rate, and your classe's gpa average; you don't get to meet us as far as i know; i didn't meet the class that graduated on my orientation.
  • congrats on the baptist scholars program, i now regret having not applied to it :crying2:; back then i thought it was going to be so simple for a new nurse to find a job, oh well, what i am doing now is researching different pediatric interships that take new grads, and train them for a year!, so i will probably move to another state and start working around january. but peds is what i want like i said before :nurse:; so i will do what is best for me.
  • for the first chapter they didn't really focus on the anatomy of the cell, that is too basic, i will look for my notes this weekend and see what they taught me, in advance physiology they go more in depth, they talk about ion exchanges inside the cell between potassium, sodium and chloride; or neurotransmitters like acetylcholine and the response that they make if they inhibit or accelerate a process.
  • i think the first exam was the easiest then they got harder of course.

you will learn all this stuff so don't get intimidated by this terms, i think you will do enough studying in your first year of nursing school, i was just as eager as you and wanted to review stuff to be prepared but to tell you the truth is a whole new way of studying so there isn't really a way to prepare for it:confused: ; just relax and enjoy your life of freedom right now!!! learning will come when you are in school!

-Thank you so much NewRN1986. I have been reading all your previous posts and they are very enlightening. I know I have more questions but I can't remember them at the moment.

-Jerziana29 I think thats a great idea about making a thread for the fall and winter term to use as a source to refer to when it comes to school because like you said it's better to work together.

NewRn, thank you so much for that info, it really helped a lot... wow they set us up altogether... GEEEEEEZ.... OOh i see what you are saying about the physiology part of it... the ion exchanges i completely forgot about all of it i dont even think they went into that in the pre-req.. im a nerd and i like refresh myself now that i have leeway.... i like to google and see stuff... thank you for the congrats on the Scholars i havent received my packet yet so i hope that i get by atleast Friday to see what it says.... So they do say the passing grades and stuff.. i thought they were just saying that... so how many of the previous class do we meet? Are they with us to explain and ask questions or something??? You have been an angel with this information :lttang:

Futurenutrire, i will go ahead and start the thread and advise my other future classmates as well so they can post... i will probably start it when i receive my packet so you can see how it is and get somewhat of an idea... so i will let you know...and also start the thread for the courses as well and give u the info on orientation!! The big day lol....

hey guys! I have been accepted to the Winter 2011 term. This thread is so helpful in many ways. thank you to all of you for bring so helpful! highly appreciated. GO SHARKS!! = )

congrats karina, such an accomplishment!! NewRN thanks again for all the info, and i already got a tape recorder,i have always found them helpful through past class lectures. and thanks for that comment about getting a certain type of watch thats easy to clean, i probably would not of thought about it untill its to late lol i ordered a couple of my books today hope to get them in a couple of days and just look over them to get an idea of whats to come!

and jerziana love the graphics!

Thanks Jerziana, I'll be looking out for you and the threads. I know that it will help me and other Winter term students be better prepared for whats ahead.

I have a few friends who are currently in the Nova program & they gave me answers to some questions/concerns that were previoulsy posted:

  • Scrubs: the scrubs sold at Nova are more expensive. We can find the more form fitting style or "Greys Anatomy" style scrubs somewhere else & have them engraved by others. My friend said she was able to get away with it so lets see how strict they will be on our class.
  • Lab Coats: we are required to purchase 2 lab coats, but I've been told 1 is more than enough. My friends say they barely ever use it.
  • Backpack: no need for a rolling bag! If need be, you have enough time in between classes to get other books from your car. Also remember we don't have every class on a daily basis. A regular bag that fits your laptop & a notebook or two is sufficient.
  • PDA: an Iphone or Itouch can be used. All you need to do is purchase & download the apps required. My friend showed me the Skyscape app on her Iphone last night. If you're thinking of buying a laptop, Apple has a really good sale for students. $100 off & a free Itouch with your purchase - valid through Sept. 2010
  • Stethoscope & watch: we won't need these until we get to Foundations which is part of our second semester. I'm personally waiting until orientation for further information. I don't want to get ahead of myself just in case they decide to change something - you never know.

If I think of anything else I will let you guys know. Congrats to everyone who's been accepted. I can't wait to start!!! :yeah:

Mari7319, Great info thanks a million!
