How is the BSN entry level program at Nova Southeastern University?

U.S.A. Florida

Hey I'm new to this site, and was just curious how Nova's nursing program is. I just got accepted into the Fall 2010 nursing program at the main campus in Davie. Any advice on how it is? Did you feel prepared when you took your NCLEX after completing the 27 month program? Would love to hear from anybody. I'm so excited and cant wait to start in august! :)

Eventhough I only went there for one semester in the generic BSN program back in the day when it was pretty new in spring 2005. I had a really nice time there. You have a pretty full schedule and it's tough but the instructors are so nice, and they really care for you as a student and try to help you pass.

When I was there, and the girls I kept in touch with afterwards and the plenty of students I meet in clinicals now myself as an RN, say that the program is excelent and they teach nclex from the beginning to the end always testing and preparing you for the state boards.

you definitely get what you pay for at NSU.

Best of luck to you :=)

aw thanks for the info..its tough out there with getting into programs and nova was the only one i got into with a 3.58 and the fact that its private i was just wondering if its worth the money. But thanks for the input! means alot!:D

Nurse2B, I just got accepted in June for the Nova program as well SO CONGRATS!! I have a couple of friends who are already in the program and they love it, they all say the same thing that its pricey, so scholarships, loans and grants are going to be your best bet and best friend. However, they tell me that they do prep you as much as they can for the boards. Its a hard process, especially the advanced anatomy and physiology class... they say that class is to weed students out, but to keep on getting help from your professors because they are actually there for the students if you have any problems... their NCLEX passing rates are great, i think its 85 or 90% pass the first time which is wonderful.. like Labrador stated, you are getting what you paid for. Make sure you send in your deposit and apply for any aid cause the money will be high.... i just interviewed for the baptist scholars so we will see... if you need any more info let me know.. see you in the fall and good luck!!! AUGUST 30th!!! Game time!

Hello there I just graduated In April of this year, and passed my boards as well two weeks ago!! :); I think they prepared me really well, to tell you the truth the exams at Nova were much harder than the NCLEX! and even though i hated them for being unfair or too hard! I am now glad, i didn't do Kaplan and still passed with 75 questions!! So good luck in your program; and let me tell you in advance that the second semester is the hardest :( and please don't give up, I had a lot of friends that quit after this semester; the first you mostly focus on Advanced anatomy and Physiology; but the second you is when you are really exposed to nursing. Our semester is hoping to score 100% passing rate, I guess will know when they tell you guys in August :); oh and by the way the current passing rate is 92%:yeah:

NewRN, thanks so much for the info...any advice on the Advanced Anatomy class?? I heard it's to weed students out I just would like some advice on how to succeed in this program. Any advice would help. Also how is the intro to Baccaulerate nursing class? I'm

Sorry if I am asking too many questions. Is this nursing math hard? Math is not my strongest subject. I heard this program is one of the toughest did u work? Also our orientation is half registration then half class? Do we bring books? They are not relaying any info yet. Again I apologize for the questions. I want to hear from a student who has been there. Thank u so much and CONGRATS ON YOUR BOARDS!!!!!! woohoooo

thanks for all the advice and information guys! im glad to hear that the nclex passing rates are right up there!they suggest not to have a job during the program so that anatomy class will have my full attention, hopefully that's enough. Im determined to finish the program since this has been a dream of mine since i was like 3. We just got to be tough and not give up!

and Jerzianna, i had the same question about the orientation /first day of school, i hope they clarify all this information, or if anybodys knows would love to hear from you. and congrats NewRN, thats so exciting!:D

Nurse2b, good thing we are on the same boat for the orientation they haven't really said anything about that. I'm anxious to know so that I can prepare. They also said to wear comfortable shoes!!! That means we are going to walk like hell but then be dressed professionally??? Did you apply for financial aid already? I'm planning to work but on the weekends I need the insurance it's cheaper through my job. Also I have 3 other friends that we are going in this together like studying and everything you are more than welcome to join us. I'm nervous!!!! Did youbapply for the baptist scholars? Also our scrubs are like a dark turquoise color. Just saw them :) take care and anything else just let me know.

  • Hello there!, I know they have changed a couple of things since I started two years ago, the math class i didn't even have , they only taught me in 2 days how to set up equations, but it definetly works to your advantage! the math is not hard once they explain you how to set up the equations is a piece of cake, plus you have a book with lots of practice problems, you will have to memorize basic information such as 1 kg= 2.2 lbs or there are 30ml= 1 oz, please know your basics because you have a math quiz every semester which i think you can retake up to 3 times but you do have to pass it in order to give meds to your patients or advance to the next semester.
  • As far for advanced anatomy and physiology it can be hard sometimes :( but what really helped us all was doing reviews together, i would say the first two semesters forget about family and boyfriends and parties :( and focus on making friends or at least study partners at school!, try different study partners each person learns different so you can learn a little bit from each one, plus when you get bored  from reading you push each other :) to stay longer, try to have a smart one in your group though :) it would make things much easier; and help each other you know don't be scared to ask who is staying after school to study.
  • Also the HPD library is your friend I would say find the nursing section the first day of school they have tons and tons of books, sometimes the one they make you buy at school is difficult to read and they explain it better in other books.
  • The first day they tell you to wear comfortable shoes because you walk throughout campus and you a scavenger hunt, looking for clues;they divide you in a group of 6 or something and have to find things such the library, or the bookstore. As far as class I don't know what they are doing know if you have physiology yes bring your book on the first day, they didn't waste time with us, but if you start with a different class i don't know :(

  • As far as work is concerned DON'T DO IT!! specially in the first year!! unless you want to be stress all the time :uhoh3: and be crying after your tests; first year is all about pathophysiology, pharm classes, clinicals, waking up at 5 in the morning; Nursing school is your full time job!!; i only worked when i went into my 5th semester, and that is because it was summer and i knew it was the "easiest of all" (for some people it wasn't, it is peds and OB); but i did see that it hinder my grades :(; the first year and a half is the hardest, so do yourself a favor and don't work, even if you have to get extra loans do it.

  • Good luck and feel free to ask any questions!! and remember this phrase "NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP!!":nurse:

NewRN, I can not thank you enough for this information!!! It was extremely helpful!!!! Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!! I loved it! I know they have changed a couple of things since you graduated because another girl said the same thing at my job. So when do you start wearing your scrubs, because they said to dress professional...... wow it seems like sooooo much!!!!! Thank god that i have prioritized some things in my life right now socially that it wont affect me as much.... I want to do the best that i can so your advise shed some light on buckling down.... A MATH TEST EVER SEMESTER!!!! OMG what basics do you think i should focus on? Like the kilo converted in pounds, etc... that type of basic? I need a head start because math is not my forte whatsoever... i am so excited to be a shark though... Nova has been ranked and they are beginning to outshine a lot of other nursing schools, so it doesnt surprised me that the material is hard, just looking at the NCLEX rates says it all.. hopefully your class passed with a 100%...... have u gotten a position yet? Once again thanks for all the info, geeeeez i need to be mentally prepared! Thanks again!

Hi Nurse2b, congrats on your acceptance! I as well will be joining you in the Fall as a Shark!! :-)

NewRN,

WOW!! Thanks so much for all of that information, I have many questions as well if you don't mind me asking. Where would you suggest us to get our scrubs? (Is the only option the teal color from head to toe?) Which stethoscope do you think would be the best for this program? (Can it be any color?) I am already looking to get all of my materials ready. :p Also, which shoes did you or your classmates purchase that you believe are the most comfortable and convenient?

As you can see, I am very anxious & want to be prepared as much as I can! I have many other questions that I hope to remember soon (so many thoughts running through my head)! Once I remember them, I will post them, thanks for your advice & your time, we all appreciate it!!

Hey PinkNurse, i remember you from the other thread.... I hope she replies back because i have so many unanswered questions... i thought nova's packet wouldve given us more information on orientation or whatnot.... i am not sure what shoes to wear on the first day....or even what to wear lol.... i think we could buy our uniforms at another place other than NOVA because a friend of mine did that, as long as its the same color.... i want the pink stethoscope lol.. Also i heard you are ZDREAM's friend, so am I we had our scholars interview together..... maybe we can meet on orientation... form a good study group or something... i want to have everything ready already... so many questions lol... GOOOOO SHARKS!!! CLASS OF 2012!!!
