Houston Nurse Residency Summer 2021 Applicants

Published

I wanted to start a new thread for those of us applying to Houston new grad nurse residency programs to ask questions and share information.

I am brand new to this site so I hope I'm doing this correctly... Good luck everyone!

I just turned in my application for Houston Methodist West/Sugarland NICU, Mother-Baby and Emergency Department. Will they send a confirmation email that our application has been received. This is my first choice hospital so my anxiety is pretty high.

Did they open their application for the Summer 2021 cohort?

Hi! I applied for the nicu at Houston Methodist west too! Goodluck to us and let me know if you hear anything ?

for HM, they don’t send a confirmation email. they’ll send you a survey link to move forward in the process if you meet the initial requirements once they go through them. This is what I was told by their program contact.

Hi, I am applying for RN residency at the HCA hospitals, in women's services, does anyone know if we need to send only one application for all locations, or do we fill out applications to all the HCA locations that are offering that specialty?

I also applied for women’s services at HCA. I believe we have to apply for each speciality. I’ve been emailing the recruiter and she also sent me an OR app because that’s my second choice.

Hi everyone!
I received a call to set up my interview for HCA next week. Although it’s not my top choice, I’m super excited! I’m not from Houston and I don’t want to put my eggs all into one basket, can anyone tell me about HCA hospitals? Like how do they treat their new grads, if y’all know anybody there, how did they like it, etc? (I’m only asking these questions to ease my family’s minds LOL)

I’m actually looking for the same info! I got a call from the HCA recruiter as well, and I just feel a little leery about it. I have seen some really bad reviews. but I’ve also seen good reviews too, so I guess that’s why I have mixed feelings. It’s not my top choice either but I’m in the same boat as you as far as not being from Houston, so I feel like I cant rule anything out.

HCA has a great nurse residency program and new grads tend to feel confident and supported throughout the 2yrs. Downside is that it is a 2yr commitment, so if it’s not a unit you love there’s no switching and there’s a possibility of not loving your job. Also if you don’t complete the contract you will owe them money for the portion remaining of the 2yrs which also doesn’t start until after your allotted training time (15-20ish weeks). In addition, (I just turned down an offer last week for HCA) if you interview for a unit and they make you an offer, you have 24-48hrs to give them your decision and if you accept you will not be able to pursue other units within HCA including scheduled interviews. That was my issue. I had an interview scheduled a week later but they wouldn’t allow me the time to attend the other interview to explore my options and if I accepted the offer, this upcoming interview would’ve been automatically canceled. It’s almost controlling. And their pay is lower than surrounding facilities, if that matters to you.

Is any other hospital require signing a commitment contract for the nurse residency?

This is the exact kind of info I was looking for! Thank you! I feel like I would probably end up in a similar boat as you having to turn something down because of the short time frame. Memorial Hermanns apps haven’t even opened up yet! I feel like maybe down the line if I don't hear anything from anywhere else I will reapply to HCA maybe.
