Hello, I am wanting to do hospice prn. However, I applied for a company that says all of their prn staff must take on call a weekend out of the month(FRi, Sat, & Sun) plus two other days in the month. The manager makes out the on call schedule for you and schedule your on call days for you even though you are prn. I have never heard of such a thing. And the on call rate is only 30.00 for the entire day despite if you go out to a call for X amount of hours. Is this common in Hospice nursing for a prn nurse. Please give me you input.

That seems a bit much. Prn staff in my agency do 1 weekend a quarter in which they are on call. The pay rate sounds about right though

That seems a bit odd. I had a PRN job and I could choose when I took call. I received $2p/hr for being on call during the weekend. We also received $150 for an automatic stipend, $30 per hr while with a patient, $25 per hr for driving time in addition to payment per mile.

The $2/hr was beeper call time and the $150 was incentive to get you to sign up

I know that is very very unusual.. I always thought prn is having the flexibility of making out your own schedule. I have never worked hospice before but to make out the on call schedule for a prn employee a month in advance is a bit much. PRN meaning no full time maybe not even part time hours + no benefits. But they would still have my schedule tied up without me having any say so in the days I want to take call.. Is very unheard of

I have worked prn at 2 different hospices over the past few years and have done a lot of call. At my present hospice, all the nurses help with call and I am required to work 2 call shifts a month. I determine which shifts I work. I get $2 per hour plus my hourly wage and differential if I make a visit. I would not do call for only $30 per day. That's too low for what typically turns out to be a busy shift.

^^^ Exactly.. 30.00 a day is unrealistic. If someone die, I may be at a faciltity or their home for hours. Thanks for your input Al. I think I will look for another job.

I misread your post - I thought you were being paid 30.00/hr not a day! That is crazy!!

This sounds like a bad deal all around. Our PRN nurses do not have to participate in the on-call rotation. When a nurse is on call, they make $2/hour beeper time, then hourly rate + mileage "door to door," from when they leave home to answer a call, to when they return.

I would not go along with this either, defeats the purpose of being PRN, not to mention the too low compensation as compared to other set-ups.

If what you are saying here is, in fact true, I would not accept the position. I would put into writing exactly WHY I was declining their offer.

However, I have a difficult time imagining what state has labor laws which would allow them to pay you such a ridiculous and paltry sum for that number of hours. Are you certain that you clearly understand the offer?
