PRN--ON CALL

Specialties Hospice

Hello, I am wanting to do hospice prn. However, I applied for a company that says all of their prn staff must take on call a weekend out of the month(FRi, Sat, & Sun) plus two other days in the month. The manager makes out the on call schedule for you and schedule your on call days for you even though you are prn. I have never heard of such a thing. And the on call rate is only 30.00 for the entire day despite if you go out to a call for X amount of hours. Is this common in Hospice nursing for a prn nurse. Please give me you input.

If what you are saying here is, in fact true, I would not accept the position. I would put into writing exactly WHY I was declining their offer.

However, I have a difficult time imagining what state has labor laws which would allow them to pay you such a ridiculous and paltry sum for that number of hours. Are you certain that you clearly understand the offer?

Agree, I bet there is a misunderstanding.

I'm home health and we receive a flat rate for being on call for a 12 hr period then paid visit rate and mileage (or hourly if we're hourly staff) for any visits. Plus OT if it applies. (We're set up differently than hospice and many HHA's and don't expect to make visits so essentially get a flat rate to be available telephonically for an occasional call).

I would imagine that the oncall nurse for your Hospice is kept busy so you're getting the $30 plus hourly for any work you perform. Ask to do a ride along with one of the nurses and find out.
