My grandmother insists that drinking beer will increase a mother's milk production. My sister actually took her up on the advice! I don't drink and I didn't think that "increased milk production" was a good enough reason start.

My grandmother & mother believe that the only drugs ever needed are penicillin, tylenol, and Valium. :)

I know the cabbage leaves work. I recall the "frozen yogurt" tampon from an article in Cosmopolitan a few years ago.

My grandmother used the morning dew for acne. To treat ringworm, urine or bleach. I've also been told to use vinegar on top of a penny. If someone had a cold/ fever, she would tie onions on their wrist and forehead. I think they were put in their socks as well. A drop of turpentine in a spoonful of sugar, to treat intestinal worms. A spoonful of honey for a sore throat. Bathing with baking soda for a clear complexion. To treat pimples, toothpaste applied overnight. :heartbeat:heartbeatIf anymore come to mind, I'll post them.

Heard from a momma at work: place an egg above the baby's crib to prevent teething pain...she tried to do it too but nurses wouldn't let her keep the egg in the room

my younger sister read about the toothpaste for acne in a teen magazine years ago (it was written up in a tips while traveling article). she had pretty significant acne. she covered her face with toothpaste. it turned into a massive chemical-burn-like mess. her face was bright red & peeling!!! worse, she had to go to our grandmother's funeral like that. i think she was about 15 at the time.

in grammar school there was a rumor that if you put pennies in your shoes, you would develop a high temperature and get sent home from school. (as far as i know it never worked!)

Red thread on the forehead will get rid of hiccups. Egg under the crib will draw out the fever and cook the egg. Crisco on the butt for diaper rash. Rubbing alcohol on everything...ouch!!

If you have a earache have someone blow ciggarette smoke in the ear and then put a cotten ball in it to hold the smoke in to get rid of the earache.

If you have a toothache rub whiskey on it. Personally I always thought drinking the whiskey would help more.

If someone is about to die and you do not want them to die on your shift tie a knot in the sheet at the foot of the bed.

Put a bar of Ivory soap at the end of the bed if you are having leg cramps.

From The Modern Medical Counsellor, 1942, re: Smallpox:

"2. The sickroom should be darkened. It is best if all light except red light can be excluded.

3. See that the bowels move daily, using a warm, cleansing enema if necessary."

Come to think of it, most of the conditions covered include "Keep the bowels open" or variations on the theme in the treatment...

Rub a wart with a chicken gizzard to make the wart go away.

My grandmother was telling me about this man who would spit on your wart and rub it into the wart. Within a week the wart was gone. She said that her mother took her to this man when she was a little girl to have him spit on her warts on her hands and she says that they just went away after that. She says that she remembers this to this day because she was so shocked that her mother took her to some man to have him spit on her wart.

I heard that if you cut a raisin in half and put the cut side on a wart and left it there, it would eventually cause the wart to disappear.
