  1. Do you get paid way below average as a school nurse?

I'm sure this has been up here before...but I've never browsed the school nurses as I recently became one. I'm an LPN of 2 Year's, prior medic, and medical assistant. My job I just left at a rehabilitation hospital paid 28/hr...when they offered me the school nurse job she said 15/hr!!!! Minimum wage here is 10! I was kind of, well, offended! I got them up to 17.85/hr plus all breaks paid off, regular benefits, and a pension plan. Just curious...did everyone else experience this incredibly low pay in school nursing? I couldn't believe they could ever fill the position at 5 dollars over minimum wage!?

You are correct, kidzcare, nor did I EVER claim to be. I thought I was pretty clear about that. I've worked lots of peds and have kids and grandkids.

I have no idea who the other lollipop person is or why you multi quoted them with me???

Why multiquote me with the condescending 'lollipop' comment. That sucks. Sorry, I couldn't resist. I didn't have anything to do with that comment, and don't like even being in the same reply. Yuck.

I totally respect people who work with kids in a caring respectful way and lots of the school nurses here sound that way to me. I referred to it as a 'laid back' attitude before. I didn't say or imply anything this other 'lollipop' person said.

I enjoy visiting the 'school nursing' forum sometimes (in addition to many others) probably because it seems fun because of the cute things kids do and say but I know y'all see lots of stuff you wish you never did and will never forget. Me too.

I hope y'all don't mind me dropping' in now and then as long as I don't claim to be an expert in your field of expertise which I have never done. I was just giving props to school nurses. :inlove: :nurse:

Also, it's been a while since I worked and sometimes I like to explore new horizons.

I'd be willing to bet I have seen a few similar things working in peds for years, and who knows may have something to offer. I never claimed to be a school nurse, only giving a compliment to school nurses and added I may enjoy working as a school nurse one day if I ever decide to go back at all.

I meant no disrespect.

You said that the school nurses tend to be awesome and laid back. I was using your compliment to point out that the lollipop poster was NOT being awesome and laid back and therefore was unlikely to be a school nurse.

I thank you for your compliments :) I apologize that my wording did not make that clear

What are do you live in???

Im surprised you made 28/hr as a LPN. But, yeah Im going to assume there isn't much room for errors compared to working in the hospital setting.aside from the few glucose checks and maybe some insulin. other than that you're giving icepacks and lollipops out.

They don't even go here!

LPN with 6 yrs experience I get $12 an hour. Its TERRIBLE. But...I am in the same district as my children, Insurance is cheap, I get paid year round, I just enjoyed 2.5 weeks off for Christmas. For me, it's worth it.

so they renegotiated to 54,000. I'm salary. It is still lower than what I was getting paid before

This is where school nurses don't get it. You actually received a raise! Given 180 day school year at 8 hours per day, you actually make $37.50/hour (do the math) Your school year is approximately 10% less in total FT hours as opposed to those working the whole year.

I've hammered on this before...and to add, the work day is 8 hours; you get paid for "lunch." Jobs otherwise would require you to be there 8 1/2 hours - if you take a lunch break.

It's not until I break it down to this simple formula that people don't believe me when I say teachers make the same salary as nurses.

Holy cow. I sure hope the cost of living where you live is dirt cheap. I live in what's probably a fairly medium COL area and our CNA's start at $15.00/hr

A quick search in AZ indicates the average school nurse salary is about 45K. So if you figure 185 days at 7 hrs per day it's $34 and change/hr
