Hobbies off duty as a Nurse?

Published

I'm doing pre-reqs for nursing school and was wondering what people do on their down time. Does anyone have hobbies they do? Like cooking? Or motorcycle riding? Or playing video games? Or going out to eat at places or movies? Take care of kids? Take kids out to play or do stuff?

I wonder if there is some comfort off duty people can have to themselves when they're not working. I'm not in nursing school yet or even a nurse for that matter but as far as level of stress I'd like to gauge what others do in their time.

When I'm not in school(as in when the semester is over and I'm on break) play a lot of Fallout on Playstation 4. One of my dream goals as a future RN is I'd like to buy a Harley Davidson Street Glide Special if I can get into nursing school, graduate and get a job as a RN. I don't have much debt. I'd like to learn how to cook. I have some expensive kitchen appliances that I've bought over the years that are still like they're brand new. I hope I can enjoy the fruits of my labor once I get my foot in the door of this field.

What do you like to do? Are you stressed about your job? Can you sleep at night? Can you cook for yourself good food? Do you like to watch cooking shows? Do you ever travel outside the United States like I want to do?

Are you going to school again to further your education? Maybe learn a new language or get your masters or doctorate in nursing?

Do you have time for dating? Do you have time for anything? Can you work another nursing job? Would you? Would you advise that or no? These are just questions outside of the main job you work.

When I was in my undergrad and most recent graduate nursing - I did not get any chance to do hobbies. In my job as a nurse it is never done - see patient make a note. I like painting walls, decorating, I make quilts and actually made one for my office as a NP. I refinish furniture - enjoy traveling - camping. Enjoy family and friends. Nursing offers the ability to do what you want with your life if you can get the time off -depends on your hours.

In fact, hobbies expand your understanding and i have found that some of my hobbies and talking to patients with common hobbies a place to feel more comfortable as a psychiatric nurse practitioner this has been a good place with some patients to discuss hobbies -especially with males and refinishing furniture. It makes them at ease and see me as a person.

Hobbies include working on our sailboat, and sailing our sailboat. We've traveled to Europe several times. We have each been to Mexico and Canada multiple times (before we got together) and have visited all 50 states. Our plan is to sail our boat to the Caribbean and see how that goes. If we like it, we'll come back when we're old.

I love traveling.

Been all over Europe, Asia & Australia and seen all 50 states twice.

Driven to all 49 and every province in Canada

Love roadtripping & sightseeing and have been to every National Park out west except Saguaro Cactus in Tucson.

Love cooking and hiking.

Love cars!

Love listening to music and watching old commercials on Youtube

I'm a big foodie and love try ing to new cuisines and eating at new restaurants.

Love learning how to fix stuff and learning new technology and history.

We have so much in common. I like watching old commercials on youtube too! The Fallout video game is somewhat like that. A game that uses old technology. Instead of white rockets they use red rockets and the color red being a popular color in the game. Gas stations that look 50s-ish. I grew up in Tucson! I want to travel to Europe and Asia. I used to be a truck driver so I've been to a weird looking horse-shoe shape of areas I've been to in the US.

I'd break down and cry the minute I had the chance to realize I had the ability to do what I want with my life.

In the wise words of Jean Luc Picard from Star Trek Generations as he gazed out to the sea in the holodeck of the Enterprise sail ship with Commander Riker

Picard: "Will." *Admiring the view of the ocean* "Just imagine what it was like. No engines, no computers just the wind and the sea...and the stars to guide you.."

Riker: "Bad food, brutal discipline..no women.."

I like to travel, but am so useless with my money I don't often achieve it. I have been to New York and Rome since graduating 3 years ago though.

I just had a VERY interesting AN search experience.

Similar latitude here...and yes, my kids have recess if it's 0-1°.

I'm from Minnesota (northern Minnesota at that right on Lake Superior) and I remember many days worth of recess when it was -20 or -30 outside (actual temperature...wind chill probably -40). Nothing was cancelled until it got down to -60 actual (which usually meant -80 wind chill).

WOW!!! I LOVE audiobooks too!!! I am a mother of 7 year old twins and work as a UR nurse for an insurance company. I ABSOLUTELY love reading books too and since I started audiobooks a couple years ago I have read....probably at least 400 books?....I have a membership with audible.com but often will buy extra books/credits for books when I have read the 2 that are included in my membership. I am able to listen to my audiobooks while working and I will listen in the car on the way home and while cooking. "Reading" with audiobooks is really a passion of mine. If I had to actually read a book it would never happen but audiobooks have allowed me to indulge!!

I am sooooo glad to hear someone loves audiobooks as much as I do. Maybe we can swap some book selections.

My first audiobook was by Terry Brooks as part of the Wishsong series and I love reading series. I have completed sooooo many series. I just got my sister (who is a also a nurse lol) into listening to audiobooks too and she is hooked on the J.D. Robb In Death series. She is only on like book 16 but I have already read all like 43 books and just finished her most recent one that came out on Sept. 6th.

I make voodoo dolls of my most pain-in-the-*** residents and stick pins in them. No, not really. But the thought HAS occurred to me. :^)

That actually sounds like a great stress reliever lol.
