I'm doing pre-reqs for nursing school and was wondering what people do on their down time. Does anyone have hobbies they do? Like cooking? Or motorcycle riding? Or playing video games? Or going out to eat at places or movies? Take care of kids? Take kids out to play or do stuff?
I wonder if there is some comfort off duty people can have to themselves when they're not working. I'm not in nursing school yet or even a nurse for that matter but as far as level of stress I'd like to gauge what others do in their time.
When I'm not in school(as in when the semester is over and I'm on break) play a lot of Fallout on Playstation 4. One of my dream goals as a future RN is I'd like to buy a Harley Davidson Street Glide Special if I can get into nursing school, graduate and get a job as a RN. I don't have much debt. I'd like to learn how to cook. I have some expensive kitchen appliances that I've bought over the years that are still like they're brand new. I hope I can enjoy the fruits of my labor once I get my foot in the door of this field.
What do you like to do? Are you stressed about your job? Can you sleep at night? Can you cook for yourself good food? Do you like to watch cooking shows? Do you ever travel outside the United States like I want to do?
Are you going to school again to further your education? Maybe learn a new language or get your masters or doctorate in nursing?
Do you have time for dating? Do you have time for anything? Can you work another nursing job? Would you? Would you advise that or no? These are just questions outside of the main job you work.
We have so much in common. I like watching old commercials on youtube too! The Fallout video game is somewhat like that. A game that uses old technology. Instead of white rockets they use red rockets and the color red being a popular color in the game. Gas stations that look 50s-ish. I grew up in Tucson! I want to travel to Europe and Asia. I used to be a truck driver so I've been to a weird looking horse-shoe shape of areas I've been to in the US.
I love Tucson!! Especially Mt Lemmon and Old Tucson studios. I had no idea that Saguaro cactus is a national park.
I've Roadtrips all over AZ since 2008, The only city I've not been to is Douglas.
A few months ago, I took a ride from Camp Verde (Montezuma's castle, Phoenix to Eloy, Coolidge,Florence,, Miami, Globe and than over to Show Low, St Johns, Springerville, Holbrook,
Winslow, Meteor Crater and Flagstaff which I love!!
If you ever want a great milkshake, go to Dateland which is in between Yuma & Gila Bend. Best Date Shake yoi'll ever have. They even have Cactus Milkshakes as well.
I watch a lot of movies. One of my favorite things to do is rent new releases. Call me strange, but it gets my mind off of work and let's me zone out and get lost in another world for a little while. Comedy movies are a favorite after work, too.
Not a comedy, but may I recommend "Sully"? It was amazing.
I love to learn and I'm constantly reading because of this, be it on the internet or books. Most of the books I read are non fictional, I especially like to learn about theology, indigenous cultures, and neurology and psychology. I'm a pretty darn good cook too, the spicier the better!
I love my family. I have a husband who is my best friend and one child, 4 yo boy.
I wish I could travel more. I spent a year in Argentina in high school. It was amazing. Now that I have bills and family traveling internationally is exceedingly difficult. Really hope this changes.
I also love to run and be outside. especially the beach!
Hi,
Good luck in school!
I ride my motorcycle (although thinking about ditching that for an ATV since other drivers are becoming less and less focused on the road and more focused on electronics!), hiking, biking (road and mountain), target shooting (pistols, rifles, and shot guns and yes I am a lady nurse :) , and whatever else anyone asks me to do. I enjoy being outside.
Currently living with my mother, as I sold my condo and am waiting to close on my house, so I am spending more time than normal out of the house since my mother LOVES the TV (which I will never understand) and TV is like nails down a chalkboard for me, especially if it's loud! Looking forward to my new house with its beautiful wooded yard and NO TV or cable!

Thank you for this. Really.
To the OP: I knit and crochet. Bake. Sew. Normal hobbyist type stuff. It's good to make sure you include things you enjoy in your life.
I could not work a second job because I have a family, I know single nurses that work more than one job though.
My husband and I enjoy traveling to various places, walking together, listening to music, and listening to the sounds of nature at our home. I also enjoy solitary hobbies such as reading, listening to music, spending time with nature, making aromatherapy and perfume oils, and chatting with friends.

Is this your lil one in the avatar pic?!
Thanks for the thread OP, I like this.
As for me, I typically like reading, occasionally playing video games, I play bass, and I do like going to sporting events or just hanging out with friends. But my biggest outlet since I started working as an RN a little over a year ago has been taking social ballroom dance classes. Met a lot of great people, it keeps me active, and I've even gotten to the point where I took part in my first competition a few weeks ago. It's been an absolute blast for me. :)
When I was in nursing school I knew it was going to be demanding of my time and I would not get to exercise as I should. So, I took elective courses that helped me get credits and exercise at the same time. I incorporated my hobbies as well as a chance to exercise. I took life-saving classes, advanced swim classes and weight lifting classes. During lunch breaks I put my tapes in my recorder, my earpiece in my ear and walked laps in the gym. I came out healthier and was able to enjoy these classes and relax a little.

I also like to read, although I stopped reading for pleasure in nursing school. I remember reading a book for fun a couple of weeks before I took the NCLEX. I felt SO guilty for not studying instead.
I also have have lots of pets. I write. I listen to music. I cook for fun and create new recipes. I knit. I hang out with my family.
