Hobbies off duty as a Nurse?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm doing pre-reqs for nursing school and was wondering what people do on their down time. Does anyone have hobbies they do? Like cooking? Or motorcycle riding? Or playing video games? Or going out to eat at places or movies? Take care of kids? Take kids out to play or do stuff?

I wonder if there is some comfort off duty people can have to themselves when they're not working. I'm not in nursing school yet or even a nurse for that matter but as far as level of stress I'd like to gauge what others do in their time.

When I'm not in school(as in when the semester is over and I'm on break) play a lot of Fallout on Playstation 4. One of my dream goals as a future RN is I'd like to buy a Harley Davidson Street Glide Special if I can get into nursing school, graduate and get a job as a RN. I don't have much debt. I'd like to learn how to cook. I have some expensive kitchen appliances that I've bought over the years that are still like they're brand new. I hope I can enjoy the fruits of my labor once I get my foot in the door of this field.

What do you like to do? Are you stressed about your job? Can you sleep at night? Can you cook for yourself good food? Do you like to watch cooking shows? Do you ever travel outside the United States like I want to do?

Are you going to school again to further your education? Maybe learn a new language or get your masters or doctorate in nursing?

Do you have time for dating? Do you have time for anything? Can you work another nursing job? Would you? Would you advise that or no? These are just questions outside of the main job you work.

I love to read and cook, in fact I cook all afternoon on Sundays and cook for the week so I don't have to do it everyday. I also love making my own soap, candles, bath and body products. I love getting together with friends and going shopping or going to festivals, sitting at bonfires.

Really? As a hobby? You still get paid I hope. Kudos to you, I couldn't do it.

Me, I like to read, I'm completing the Game of Thrones series right now. Bike riding too (pedal bikes that is). Movie buff, although I'm too much of one sometimes.

I have a dream of driving the whole Route 66 someday. I'll get there eventually.

Downtime is a must..whether it be once you're working or while you're in school. When you do anything stressful you need something for self care.

I work out. I'm marathon training now. I read.. mostly sci fi. Right now I'm absorbed in a series by C J Cherryh. I also have a 3 year old so.. we play.. we do things together.

I have always enjoyed some sort of physical activity: gets the endorphins moving and helps me keep a strong core for lifting. Over the years I have skied, hiked, done jazzercise, ice skated, lifted weights, bicycled. I always wanted to do ballroom dancing, but dh is an adamant NO!

I would love to travel more. I have seen much of the USA, but only other countries are Mexico and Canada. When I worked acute care, I had the money but could never get enough time off; now I teach so not enough money.

I also enjoy reading and gardening. Cooking, bleh. Planning and preparing meals for 3 kids and spouse for 20 years was enough.

Oh my, men just don't get it.

And then they wonder why we watch the ones who do it on TV and drool.

I also enjoy reading various subjects including Stephen King. Mostly I am reading for my Masters now (public health).

I cook every weekend and make enough meals to last 3-4 days.

BUCKET LIST. I have wanted to go to Iceland for a long time! My best friend and I celebrated 20 years of friendship last year and decided that for our 30th friend-iversary we are going to go to Iceland.

You know, the land of the ice and snow. From the midnight sun, where the hot spring flow.

Being a nurse is a career like any other. When you're not working you can do anything you want.(within reason)

Specializes in public health, women's health, reproductive health.

I play the cello and I love to hike. I also crochet sometimes and last year I was learning to use a drop spindle. When I first started out as a nurse, I dropped all of my hobbies because I was so stressed and miserable. Whatever you do, don't do that. I'm glad to be back to doing the things I love.

Specializes in LTC, Rehab.

I make voodoo dolls of my most pain-in-the-*** residents and stick pins in them. No, not really. But the thought HAS occurred to me. :^)
