Hillsborough Community College Spring 2009

Published

I am an alternate for HCC Dale Mabry campus. I am not yet in the program. This is my third time as an alternate, so; I don't want to be too optimistic. I found out that starting last week the school was going to be notifying alternates if they have a spring 2009 seat. I am wondering if anyone has heard that they are in yet. I am very nervous, and I would appreciate any information. Thank you

yeah, actually I am in my second semester, please feel free to ask any questions!

i probably have like 100s of questions about the program. lol. what was your gpa when you got accepted? what campus are you taking your classes at? thanks in advance!

Specializes in OR Pre-op, Post-op.

This wait is torture. Ms Flores wrote me back but never said wether they had my app. All she said was they will review all application the end of March. Getting info out of these guys is like talking to the CIA

Hello I was wondering if anyone can let me know what equipment is needed upon entering the nursing program at HCC. DO we need uniforms,if so what are they?

Thanks in advance

Starfish1, how was the pharmacy and math class your first semester? I noticed that Nur process 1 is 10 credits and not broken down into credits per class? Do you think that if I were to do a NUR 3cr pharmacy for nursing class that:

1 it would transfer it

2. even if it didnt, if it would make it easier taking it at HCC

How long are the math, pharmacy class and what type of math is done in the class>/

Did most of your original classmates make it through nursing process II

Is it possible to work 40hrs and do well in the program? How has your experience been?

I plan to apply this may for the Jan 2010 evening program and I am trying to anticipate what is going to help me if I get in and what I may need to do to prepare before the program.

thanks.

Nursingbyf8th-My GPA was lower than yours, and I got in. I didn't get in until my third try. With your GPA, you will probably get accepted right away, and if you don't you will at least get an alternate letter, but don't despair, your GPA is high for Alternates. It is just hard waiting longer to hear from them. I have noticed that the fall GPAs are higher then the spring. I think because USF doesn't have fall admissions..??? I think the GPAs went like this for applicants that were accepted into the program at first letter. Spring 2008: 3.13, Fall 2008: 3.21, Spring 2009: 3.16. I got in in Spring 2009 as an alternate, and they said they accepted all alternates with a 3.00 or better. I also had a friend who had a 2.89 and got in Spring 2007. Good luck, and as you can see you don't have to have the 3.7s people scare you into thinking.

What is the schedule at HCC? I read the in class time is only 6 hours a week and other programs in the area are around 20, just wondering if this is correct. Thanks.

starfish1, can you tell me what books you all used in nur process1 and which chapters out of potter and perry that you had to study the first 3 weeks? thank you.

you do not need any equipment, but then again I am not sure what you mean exactly by "equipment". as for the uniforms just a wine color top and white scrub pants, and you will need the patch to sew on your uniform... HCC does not require anything else but books

let me know if there are any other questions!

sure as for the nursing books you use in NP1

you will purchase them as a whole set for your nursing courses ( I had to bring my husband with me to carry out allllll the books we had to purchase, there is no way I could have gotten all of them to my car in one trip!!), like this semester NP2 I havent had to purchase anything else but what I bought from last semester. From Perry and Potter, you will need to know....

week 1- two chapters they will put online from another text in pdf format, then as for perry and potter, chapters 1-5

week2- chapters 6-10

week 3- test over the 12 chapters and start on chapters 25-33

week 4 chapters 16-24 and the med surg book Lewis chapter 6- med calculation test will be given this week as well chapters 1-8 in the clinical calculation book

week 5 test on weeks 3 and 4

I dont think much of this has changed or will change, but it gives you a rough idea on what to expect. I would start doing the med calculations before school starts (if you are attending) and get that out of your way, the more you have done the less you will have to cram, are you starting in August??

please let me know if you have any more questions!

Thank you so much Starfish. This semester is my last for prereqs. However, I will be taking Chemistry and Dev. Psych this semester to get them out of the way as i do plan on getting my BSN.

I will be applying this May for the Jan 2010 evening program. I wish that I could apply for the Fall but the deadline was last month and I had not completed Micro or AP2.

I have one sister in her first semester of nursing school and another one starting in May at Broward College. If I am accepted at HCC, I would have 7mths to diddle my thumbs. My sister has already briefed me as to how much work/reading that they had to do and she doesn't work.

I have to work full time so I am trying to get as much out of the way as possible. I hope to have read Chpt 1-10 and 15-33 in Perry and Potter 2xs by the time of next Jan and I will teach myself the dosage calc and expose myself to medical terminology. I have started the dosage calculations and conversions and so far not bad.

My goal is to eliminate as much pressure as possible the first semester.

How are you finding the program so far? Are there any other things that I should start on or know about? How about the math, that is not my forte, is there anything that I should review?

Thanks so much.

Ok Thanks Starfish1. When I say equipment I mean do we need our own stethoscope or a watch with a second hand, things of that sort. Is there anything that we are required to have of our own to get through the nursing program?

what campuses is everyone attending/applying to? i just want to get an idea on where everyone goes. thanks. :)
