Hillsborough Community College Spring 2009

Published

I am an alternate for HCC Dale Mabry campus. I am not yet in the program. This is my third time as an alternate, so; I don't want to be too optimistic. I found out that starting last week the school was going to be notifying alternates if they have a spring 2009 seat. I am wondering if anyone has heard that they are in yet. I am very nervous, and I would appreciate any information. Thank you

That is so awesome Danielle! Yeah I'm not sure about if you can switch from day to evening but, I am sure you can ask around. The ladies on here have been quite helpful in relaying pre-info to us so I'm sure someone will get back to you soon. I wish you all the best of luck and pray that we both can be accepted in the program! It has been my dream every since I was a teenager to become a nurse so, I'm excited for that moment to happen. I had asked with actual acceptance letters do they send it in the form of a letter or do you get like this huge package with a whole bunch of info and important dates. I know at Polk Community College they send packages out to those who have been accepted and just formal letters to those who were not accepted.I said to myself if I knew the difference how HCC does their accept/reject if i see a huge package I'll take it out of the mail, if I see a letter I'll just shut the box! haha. Well, this is a very exciting but nerve wrecking time but, the Lord's will be done in all things for each and every one of us.

Starfish I do have a question that recently crossed my mind. I have taken Nutrition and Drugs, Psycology, Human Growth and Development and so forth but has been a couple of years. I passed all classes with a's and b's cause I knew that I wanted to continue with my education and obtain my BSN and eventually Masters. Will I have to repeat those classes in actual nursing school? Do they have a certain time frame as to how long courses are good for and credible? I know i will have to on my own review those things but, I hope I won't have to retake those classes as I have already taken and passed them.

Hey sorry for the delay, it has been days since I have been on this forum. as for the questions... I see there are many=)

as for switching- there is a good chance you could switch from the day to evening- you could even do it at orientation if they ask...many people want to go from plant city to dale mabry and night to day classes...so your chances are really good! as for getting in- the GPA's change each semester I think it is usually around a 3.3 or around that point

as for the acceptance letters- they come ina plain envelope with HCC as the return address...sorry!!! wish it could be an easy one to recognize

I really wish you all good luck in getting into the program- you'll do great- it's not easy but time goes by sooooo fast when you enter the program!

as for the classes you took awhile ago, I took my AP classes in 2004 and got accepted in 2008, they dont really look at the dates, I dont think.

as for getting ready to enter the program, you could get a book called test success for first year nursing students and do questions from that book and read it...there isnt toooooo much you can do to prepare yourself....honestly I didnt do anything and did fine that first semester.

please let me know if you have any further questions of if I missed one!

good luck again!

Starfish -

I apologize if you already said this, but which campus/program are you in?

by the looks of it, if i was to switch to night (of course this is all assuming I get in) I would also have to switch to Plant City, because it seems like they only offer the courses in the evening at dale mabry according to a spring schedule (np 1 in spring, 2 in fall, etc.). I am in New Port Richey, and it would make the drive more like an hour, which wouldn't be too bad, except for the clinicals. do you have to go to the hospital the night before to pick up your assignment? no matter what, that is going to be a haul, but if i'm out that way for clinical it would become really a pain. Thanks for your help! Hopefully we will find out this week!

Starfish, how far are you in the program and is most of your class still intact? How did you find pharmacy? What would you reccommend to brush up on? Do you reccommend taking Chemistry or Development Psych (Lifespan)? How about Medical Terminology? I plan on taking Med Term this summer as well as Dev. Psych.

Any tips? Do you know if they will let you xfer from Dale Mabrey program (evening) to Plant city if you start in the Spring? I see that they only accept evening admissions in the Spring for Dale Mabrey but Plant City is much closer to me.

What do you plan to do this summer?

Hi Danielle,

I am currently in the Dale Mabry Spring program. I know Plant City has an evening program but I guess that is only in the fall? but you might want to double check because I know that Plant City and Dale Mabry both have an evening program but not sure what semesters they run. We dont go to the hospitals the night before to get our assignment (thank goodness!) have you applied to PHCC? I was going to go there but decided on HCC (just asking because they are closer to you) You will usually have 2 hospitals to chose from for your clinicals- I think HCC uses, TGH, UCH Carrollwood and Fletcher, Zephyrhills Hospital ( I did my first clincial rotation there), St Joseph's on MLK and I think plant city uses Lakeland and Brandon? don't hold me to that though:wink2:anyway good luck and I hope you find out this week too- I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

let me know if there is anything else I can answer for you- I know it can be overwhelming!

Hello, I am in the day program at Dale Mabry, second semester. As for classes, I would honestly take that pharm for nursing NUR1141-86716 or Health Assessment1060-86715 I think the health assessment class would be great especially if you have no experience with patient care. Pharm would be good, but I think you MIGHT get more from the health assessment course and would suggest that one, or take both:wink2: I dont see a medical terminology class in the summer listed on Hawknet- but maybe I am not looking in the right spot? I wouldn't necessarly take a chemistry or development psych, I do not think it will help that much and think the other two classes above would be a better choice. I am sure you could transfer to Plant City- you would have to get approval from the director of the program, but I don't think that should be a problem- we always lose students through each semester so there SHOULD be room but I can't really say, you know? they might also offer it in the orientation if they have someone that wants to switch or transfer- they always ask students if they want to switch program times or campuses.

I wish you all good luck! let me know if you have any more questions- I'd be glad to help the best I can!

Thanks for the great information Starfish! :) I ended up not applying to PHCC because I have 3 young girls, and with the way they do their program you have 2 6-hour days and 2 clinical days. I didn't want to put that much on the grandmas (they will be babysitting and shuttling to school). That is partly why I'm think of switching to evenings, but in the end I think Plant City may just be too far. But you are right, PHCC is only 20 minutes from me, so it is much closer!

I also wanted to thank you for mentioning that your acceptance letter was a normal size, that way I won't have a heart attack right when I get the mail. :)

no problem...

I didnt go to PHCC due to all the class days and clinical days, like you...I dont have any kids just a husband but I can completly understand your situation. I think HCC is a good school and you only have 2 class days and 1 clinical day, so the schedule is nice.

good luck!

Hi Starfish, thanks for the response. However, I am not in the program. This semester will be my last for pre-reqs and I will finally get to apply at the end of May for the Jan 2010 Evening program.

Unfortunately, if I am accepted, I will have 7mths off with nothing to do so I am taking classes that I would need for my BSN. Medical term is under HSC and it is mostly offered at Ybor. I have 7 mths off so I am just looking to take classes to cover pre-reqs needed for BSN and to help me prepare for the program in Jan. I was told that a basic med terminolgy class would help me in nursing school....thoughts?

Also, are the teachers the same for the day Dale Mabry program as for the evening? What was your most challenging class? What was th easiest? which hospital did you do clinicals at and how did you find it? Did you enjoy clinicals?

I know, alot of questions;;;)

The only class I will need to retake is Statistics for my BSN and am not looking forward to it! Like you NewGoalRN I took all possible classes before applying into the nursing program so that after I received my AS degree I could go right into the BSN program. The only thing I am worried about is that it has been years since I took alot of these classes but for now I'm just reviewing all of my anatomy and micro materials.

I just hope the school was able to access my transcripts easily as I had taken all of my classes with HCC but I did not take classes for 18 months. They told me all I had to do was update my records as it had not been 2 yrs so I was glad about that. Had I not had any activity for two whole years I would basically had to have start from scratch! I hope that when the nursing evaluation people see that they don't give me 'negative' points and just throw my application out! i applied for the fall 09 so we'll see what happens. I also applied at Erwin and have a meeting to go to in May to fill out my paperwork. They will then select students by drawing numbers and place students in one of three classes, fall of 09, spring of 10, and fall of 10. I am so scared. I hope to get accepted by both schools in which I will take the RN over the LPN. I hate this competive mess! hehe

Hello, thats ok. everyone has lots of ??'s!

I haven't heard of med term. or anyone who has taken it, it can't hurt, that's my opinion! I really think that assessment class would be better though, but thats up to you. I dont think the teachers are the same for the day and evening program...they switch schedules so it's hard to tell you who teaches when. Everyone said that first and third semesters are the easiest and second and fourth are the hardest...I ended up with a B my first semester...the first two tests I didnt do very well on, it is the questions that get you- always 2-3 correct answers but you have to pick the best ones. I have had no problems in this second semester, however I do study a lot...I am not working now and really dont have much else to do, but I dont find the second semester hard- I like it better than the first even, because we are learning more about disease processes and what to do when the patient has them (the whole part of school in my opinion, wouldn't you want to learn what to do?!?!- that's my view) anyway I think all the classes are challenging but you just need to work hard and want it, and you'll do fine:wink2: don't let what other people say scare you, my neighbor failed two semesters and kept saying how hard this semester was and blah blah blah, maybe that made me work harder, I dont know, but I am doing fine this semester, no problem- thank goodness, but there are a lot of people failing, so it is not easy. I was at Zephyrhills last semster (1st) for clinicals, it was OK didn't learn much but that was because of my clinical instructor (they fired her) and I am at UCH Fletcher this semester and LOVE it, I really like being in the hospital and learning!! I am not sure what you mean by "finding my hospital"? you usually have a choice of 2 hospitals for clinicals- this semester it was TGH and UCH, last semester Zephyrhills and UCH Carrollwood.

let me know if there is anything else!

take care!
