High school transcripts (RANT!)

I am so fed up with my high school and their sluggishness with sending out transcripts! I filed a transcript request months ago and the transcripts were never sent. I gave in my high school diploma but that's not good enough, the college needs my transcripts. They have my college transcripts but because I don't have enough credits they need my hs transcripts too. This will possibly cause me not to be able to register for the spring term. This is such a hassle! I did my time in that school; it's only fair that they should be responsive to graduates who need transcripts.

I feel your pain. I had MAJOR difficculties getting my college transcripts out of three different New Orleans universities when I moved to Florida after Katrina. It wound up making me sit out a semester, and I didn't get accepted until July for this past fall so I had to register late too. Wish you better luck than I had! Do you still live in the same area? Can you go in every day and harass them until it gets sent? At least call them daily maybe?

Here's the annoying part: The application checklist clearly states that they need a High School Diploma OR an official transcript. So, after I bring in the diploma (a week later) they tell me, no, sorry, we need the transcripts too and your application cannot be processed without it.

At this point it looks very unlikely that I will be able to register in time for class. The class I need is filling up rapidly so I will probably wait another semester. All for the best I guess... I'm due at the end of May and wasn't sure if it was a great idea for me to take any classes this semester.

Ok, did you go to my high school?

I had a very similar thing happen. I called the cutoff day when all the paperwork had to be in for the Nursing Screening and I knew it was all there (well, thought I did). Turns out they never received my transcripts!!! And like you, they needed that! So, I called my high school, which I wasn't even sure if they were open because it was Christmas Break, but thank goodness someone was there. They ended up allowing my mother to pick up my transcript for me (I was at work, but would have left to do it, but mom offered) and then she had to go drop it off at my school, in a sealed envelope that day to make sure I qualified to be considered for the program. They normally won't let you do that because it has to be mailed, but she made an exception (I explained my situation) I was livid!! I requested these transcripts in 2004 and I guess I was wrong to assume my high school had sent them.

Yes, my advice ladies, check that out because you can't just trust that someone has actually done their job!

I'm good now, but I would have been so mad if that was the reason I wasn't accepted!!! Did you get everything cleared up?

Try calling your local school board or governmental education department and find out if they have them yet.

I've been out of HS for years and this is the only way for me to get a hold of a transcript, but they're quick and easy- they just fax a copy over to whomever you specify, for a nominal fee.

*I'm in Canada, btw, so it could be different, but worth looking into nonetheless

I could be wrong, but I believe here in the US you have to actually have a copy mailed...it cannot be a faxed copy because then it wouldn't be and "official" copy. Ugh...all the ropes you have to jump through!!! My advice...follow up, follow up, follow up!!!

What a pain! I got to the point where I had copies sent to me in sealed envelopes so that I would have them on hand. All the colleges I've applied to have accepted my copies while I wait on the official ones. Good luck!

Chaya, did you go to a public school in NYC? I've had very good luck with going in and presenting them with the requisite letter and fee.

I went to my high school and got the transcripts. Then hand-delivered them to my school.

Hard to do if you live out of state - maybe someone nearby could get them for you and overnight them to you.

I don't live in the same state where I went to HS. I could ask my parents to take care of it for me but they both work during the day and the school is closed by the time they're off. I also wouldn't want to put my parents through the hassle...

Just go to the school in question administrations building and physically pick up the transcript yourself. This is what I did when I decided to attend college only one month before school started that semester. Sometimes we have to do things ourself if we want it done right, or even done at all. Just calm down, there are alot more things in life to get upset over.......All nurses need patients!!!!!

My daughter needed her high school transcripts once and didn't like the hassle she got. She owed them money (she went to a private hs and mommy stopped paying for it at the end). When she paid the money she owed them, then she got her transcripts. I tried to refrain from the parent role impulse to nag, but when she remarked about it to me, I was the one to remind her that if she still owed them money, she wouldn't get the transcripts!
