How many of you are school nurses in a high school? Also, what kind of office rules do you have posted up for your students? Information as well, for the students to read.. I am enjoying my job so far. Nothing too serious yet, maybe jus a few sprains here and there due to the icy sidewalks.. I'm loving it :) Plenty of paperwork throughout the day though. I am still trying to make myself comfortable around the students and other staff members. What kind of presentation ideas do you present to the students?

I don't have any clinic rules posted specifically. The kids just know, or it doesn't take long to figure out. What the expectations are. Sorry, I am not much help on the presentations. They are pretty much all done in the health classes or at all school assemblies. So glad you are enjoying your job! Don't let your guard down, watch out for the calm before the storm theory.
Thank you! :) It's so calm and neutral right now. I'm only getting about 15 students. It's only increasing each day that goes by.. lol students are starting to notice that I am here now so they come by and ask how long I've been working and I tell them since the third day of school and they look at me in AWE hahaha great students I tell ya!

We have no cellphones/ipods allowed in the Health Center posted and Confidentiality/don't ask others why they're here. Also, everything you tell me is confidential except...(per my State Laws). That's pretty much it. We do have a TON of pamphlets in the hallway that the students can browse through when waiting for me. We have the usual about relationships, sex, abuse, relationship violence, suicide, etc.
Welcome to high school! AKA overgrown kinder-gardeners
Awesome! I'm enjoying it. I need to visit our hospital so I can get some pamphlets as well.
Also contact your local health department/public health clinics. They may be able to help with pamphlets as well.

Welcome to the wonderful world of HS nursing. I would NOT work with any other population!
No clinic rules. I just yell at them PRN.
I have drug posters, suicide hotline posters, feel good about your body posters, an Einstein sticking his tongue out poster, the awards I won for the blood drives hung up, etc.
I have grades 7-12. Ask me anything.

Following along! I just started at a high school this year. I just have a couple of posters up (mostly ones I've printed and laminated myself!), about hand washing, dating violence, concussions, etc.
I really need to liven the place up though!

I have an ear anatomy poster, a musculoskeletal anatomy poster and a respiratory system poster. I also have a beach scene collage that I can stare at all day and pretend I am right there. I have Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy paper snowflakes on my windows. I have a double-decker couch Lego set with Uni-kitty, Retro Space Guy (Benny- SPACESHIP!), Vetruvius and Lord Business. I also have a flippy sand falling in water thing that is hugely popular. Kids will come in just to flip it and watch the sand fall. I also have a magnet set that kids build and play with all the time as well. I also have some outdated CPR posters that I need to take down.
I have no rules posted, but I am big on manners (Hello, please and thank you) and I have been known to call kids out on their lack of manners. I also don't let kids ask other kids why they are here in my office. A lot of my daily kids think since they are in here all the time that they own the place and like to ask other kids why they are here and then proceed to tell me what to do (one special needs student and one particular nosy student) so I have had a few stern talks with them.
I like high school kids because they get my sarcasm (most of the time).

I work with the same grades - Far and I are peas in pod. (That wear pink on Wednesdays, of course.)
I advocated to start teaching the health classes in my high school - we had none and really needed some! This year, I run them seminar style, teaching one grade a quarter, once a week during a study period. Just finished up sex ed with my 10th graders. This is how I get all my presentations across.
Luckily, I had admin that were fully on board with this. I had been teaching a one class seminar to my 12 graders that I call "College Health 101" about the transition to being fully in charge of one's health in college; this year I get 6 class periods to talk about it and I'm excited!
As for rules, nothing posted except: One MUST have a pass to enter this office. Though, that rule, is often hard to enforce thanks to teachers - but I get the message across eventually.
Have plenty of pads and tampons on hand for the ladies (and heat packs and ibuprofen/acetaminophen if your district/states allows OTC PRNs). I also stock extra underwear to reduce lost instruction time - yep, that need is still there in HS in my experience!
And. Aren't the HS teachers a whole lot more fun to work with?? Compared to the Elem. teachers. Wow. In my experience. A completely different mind set. (and I mean that in a good way).
no.
