Here Comes Ike!

Published

Just took a look at latest prognostications..... of the 6 available hurricane models, 3 of them are directed toward the Galveston-Houston area. Looks like it may be another exciting weekend.

Fifty foot waves, oh dear...

I work on the 7th floor. If we experienced a 50 foot wave, we would

drown with our patients. They say that we can not evacuate our hospital

so we would have to stay. But, my state is not in Ike's path.

Praying for you folks in Texas, especially Galveston, and low lying areas.

I live in Houston and this is precisely one of the reasons I am agency. to hell with a hospital, my family and I are bunkering down and riding the torm out. No way in the world would you find me at work during this storm or any like it. I have plenty of food, water and ammo...

i love that ammo post...i pray that you don't need it

if you are not in one of the lower parts of houston you should be able to ride this out if you have been thru really heavy rains and you have not flooded out [or been close to flood waters] you have a better chance of riding out than getting out on the hiways at this time..if you have had trouble with flood waters try and get to a shelter

don't leave any thing outside that could become airborne but the real problem with this storm going to be the storm surge and the rain..like getting a 2 foot rain all at once

thinking of you and all in harms way

They are predicting that all of Galveston will be under water with 20 ft storm surges. The sea wall that was built after the 1900 great hurricane is only 17ft tall. Most of us in Harris county are encouraged not to evacuate. We are told to "hunker down". Texan way of saying "stay put"! I am 70 miles inland. We (keeping fingers crossed) should be in the clean side and can expect 75 mph winds. My neighbor tried to go to the store and found the local police were having to direct long lines of people trying to get last minute things. No batteries, ice or gas here in my town.

Reporting to work at 2pm to relieve the E2 team that is in place.

I am praying hard for all in this storm's path. My thoughts are with all who are in peril tonight through the end of this storm.

much of galveston is now under water. the sea wall will have no effect on this hurricane because of the shear magnitude of the waves. note that we are still many hours from landfall...i live 200 miles + inland we are under inland tropical warnings. i was mentioning to my husband that after the storm i bet there would be some good shells out on the beach ....he told me (this was when we thought a cat 4:watherthunderstormc was coming) that i probably could just go outside and pick them up or stick a net out the window and catch them as they flew by...:eek::eek::eek::eek:

I used to live on Galveston Island. I sure hope no one decided to stick around and have a 'hurricane party'. My heart goes out to all trying to escape Ike's path. I know how congested the highways and Interstates can be around Houston on normal days. Those that are in the path of this storm, please let us all know you are safe.

Only about 60% of galveston evacuated, according to the mayors speech 15 minutes ago.

They have done 12 helicopter evacuations so far.

There is a boat 90 miles off shore who lost power, with 22people on board. We cant rescue them, its too dangerous.

As far as congestion, people had plenty of time to leave, there was no traffic this AM and roads were completely clear. We didnt even open contraflow lanes.

It was very smooth this time...

i just heard there was 10 people out on a pier in galveston that was having to be rescued by helicopter. what are these people thinking????

Be safe!!

I live in Gulfport, MS and we're getting some of the outer bands. Lots of flooding but no rain.... The rivers are rising and the beach is totally flooded. The roads parallel to the beach are flooded.

they are going to have a problem with getting rid of water that comes in and doesn't have a way to drain out

on the way to town this afternoon i saw big buses from prisons headed north

flashlights, batteries and ice are sold out and we [central la] are not suppose to get the worse of it

God be with those in galveston - baytown area in texas

God be with all of you. Keep safe and take care.

I'm in Austin... looks like we are going to be spared the worst of this beast. We are housing evacuees from sister hospitals on the coast. It will be a long weekend here at work. MY best to those affected.
