I went and tried out the Littman Classic II stethoscope this evening and the first one I couldn't hear anything. So the guy checked it out and he really couldn't hear anything either...so he said it must be the scope. So he tried out the other one he had and could hear better in it. Well I tried it and could barely and I mean barely hear a pulse. :uhoh21: He said you just need to focus on the sound your listening to and I should be able to hear it better. Is he right on that or is that just not the scope for me? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hi,I couldn't help but read the thread... I am a nursing student who is graduating in Dec. and going into Peds. I currently own a Littman Classic and am looking to sell it only because I need a Ped stethoscope. My stethoscope is in MINT condition. This is really horrible but I didn't use it much during my rotation. It's black and I have an extra set of earpieces. If anyone is interested PM me and we can negotiate a price.
This would be perfect for a nursing student!
Try selling it on ebay if nobody on here wants it!

How much would you be willing to sell it for?
I would sell it for $40 plus s&h. i just looked on alheart.com and it is currently on sale for $62.99. If anyone is interested PM me. I will only accept a check, and once I receive it I would send the stethoscope out immediatley.
P.S. I would sell it on ebay but I don't have time to sign up and worry about it. I would rather just sell it to a nursing student on here.
I have a littman classic II and have had it for nearly 10 yrs with no problems.
Crazy thing is, if you cannot hear out of it, I just turn it around to reverse the ears and it works.. I dont know why it should matter, but it absolutely does, also be aware that the bell is rotatable and if it is not on the correct side that opens the bell for acoustics it will not work. One side closes off while one side can work when rotated.
A resident let me use/listen with her "electronic" stethoscope - Oh my God!! If only I could bring myself to buying a $500.00 stethoscope. Even if I did, I dont think I would want to take it to work. (too expensive to lose).
I could hear everything - like turning on a radio. you can turn the "intensity" (?) up or down. All the way up - I swear I could hear capillary refill (ok, maybe not) - but close.
I purchased a Littman Cardiology scope, but hear as well with a $19.00 double tubing scope.I mean lungs, murmers, extra sounds, bruit, the works. Best with the less expensive.
I hate to say it but my master cardiology doesn't have anything over those cheesy disposable stethoscopes we use in dirty rooms.

About the ear thing - I found out that it's because of the way it angles to your ear canal. When pointed the other way, it scrunches up against your ear itself - while this will still let you hear LOUD sounds, I'm sure that the point of using stethoscopes isn't about LOUD sounds
Ideally, the ear-ends should be pointing forwards
Hello aegirl,
I haven't had the chance to use a Littman yet. I have a Prestige Medical stethoscope and I find it to be very good. It's not an expensive one, I was told to get a cheap one for when I'm going to school. The model number for the kit that it came in is A5-blk. Here is a link in case you want to look at it.

I'm sure there are better ones out there, but this one seems to work great for me.
Thanks,
Butch
I second the advice to make sure you have the angles of the eartips correct (they should point forward). Also, second making sure you have the correct side flipped on.
Also, you said you were listening for a pulse. As in apical pulse? Were you listening for a pulse with a BP cuff inflated? Otherwise, you're not going to hear much unless there is a problem.
I have a Littman Classic II SE (whatever SE means...) and it works fine. A nurse where I work just got a Master Cardiology and although it's not louder, things are more clear.
HTH.
