I just wanted to let US residents know that there is a hot new petition available online to get the US Dept of Labor to remove unscientific statements promoting chiropractic quackery as a career to unsuspecting college students. Please sign the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/ajb2/petition.html and tell everyone you know (friends, family members, MDs, RNs, PTs, discussion lists, etc). Hopefully with enough support we can protect many students from wasting their careers and becoming future enemies of scientific healthcare.
Petition

Thank you
I would NEVER sign a petition that paints any profession with so broad a brush.
I am truly very Sorry for your horrid experiences. But no way am I going to convict an entire profession for a few quacks.
How would you feel someone launched a similar malicious attack on ALL NURSES for ONE, (or even 10 or 20), making a horrendous error of judgement or committing a crime (such as stealing narcs?)....
Think before you act. This is wrong in my book. There are other ways to seek redress. This is just plain the WRONG way to go about it!
I'm am really surprized that medically trained RNs are acutally supporting quackery. Sorry but I thought nurses were smarter than falling for this. Instead what I see is a lack of understanding and a heap of ignorance. I guess I was wrong
The petition doesnt not "paint with so broad a brush". It is accurate. The statements quoted show that what I am protesting is commonplace and pervasive. So we are not talking about "a few quacks". We are talking about misinformation that is being promoted in US Dept of Labor career guides and in chiropractic colleges everyday.
There is also the negative outcomes to consider. Chiropractors hide this but according to the Rand group, only 11% of chiropractic neck manipulations are appropriate. Only 50% of low back manipulations are appropriate. Many patients are not being accurately diagnosed and are being given inappropriate treatment. Outcomes of this include: death from strokes, wasted money, wasted time, herniated vertebral disks and injuries from delayed referral to medical physicians.
So quit beating up the messenger and see how serious this problem really is.
If you want some facts visit http://www.chirobase.org otherwise check chiropractic sources.
oh quit already. do something about it that is constructive! You were harmed....you were wronged, OK! I would never take that away from you...
I have my OWN viewpoint, so don't shoot this messenger either:
. I have had chiro work well for me. So has my husband, and various members of my family. You must know: Just like anything else, there are "good" and "bad" ones out there. There ARE quacks in traditional medicine; and there are quacks in NON-traditional/wholistic medicine. There are "quacks" among the ranks of many medical professionals. SO let's paint the WHOLE profession with a broad brush to make a point? Really defaming an entire group for the malpractice and neglect of ONE is just plain WRONG!
I find your defamatory assertions really offensive to those who practice honestly and professionally.
Again, in earnest: I am sorry for your suffering. I am sorry for your being wronged. But this is NOT the way to handle it, I still say.:zzzzz
I have never been to a chiroprator, but my PM is DO and has helped me so many times!
Had the typical neck / shoulder pain and he cracked me into place. But also had what I thought was pleural pain on inspirtion which turned out to be a rib out of place that he manipulated.
Also had sinus pain and he worked on my neck and shoulders and relieved the pressure.
Now if he told me he could cure cancer I'd call the AMA, but I doubt he would or even believes he could.
I just started going to a chiro and to be honest, I've felt like I have more energy, I haven't had a headache and my sinuses are draining...something the ENT couldn't get them to do. My neck always felt a little "off" and I beleive that it was.
In every profession their is good and bad and it's up to every person to educate themselves and not believe everything they hear or see.
My chiro has worked out well for me, he has educated me on posture and exercises I can do at home. I have no insurance and I still feel it's very affordable care. He was my last resort and that's fine with him and me. I tried everything modern medicine had to offer...while the ENT was able to give me the right combo of RX's he could not figure out why my ear was not draining, ever since I went to the Chiro it's been fine.
You are can own your anger and frustration all you want but don't be so quick to judge ever Chrio out there. You came across a bad one and I'm truly sorry about that but don't expect everyone to agree with you.
If the problem has to do with the neck and spinal column, yes, I can see how chiropractic care can help. But I've heard the general rule, if the spot to be treated is not the neck, head, and spinal column (i.e. treating endometriosis, gallbladder, etc), run far FAR away.
From what I understand, online petitions are a waste of time and aren't taken seriously. Want to do something that is worthwhile? Write your senators, etc. That way your voice will be heard.
I'm am really surprized that medically trained RNs are acutally supporting quackery. Sorry but I thought nurses were smarter than falling for this. Instead what I see is a lack of understanding and a heap of ignorance.
I am also sorry cdmguy ... but I take great offense to this comment and I certainly think other nurses that have read and responded to this thread should also.
Because we do not agree with your perception, we are all ignorant? That statement alone suggests that perhaps you are blinded by your passion to make rapid and immediate change. I will certainly agree with the basis of your concern and also believe that students should be give legitmate facts about being a DC and that if the profession is not properly regulating itself, then there needs to be outside involvement to make it right! However, I have to agree with my fellow nurses that there are better ways in which to promote and direct change. A petition is certainly a way to start this, but I also believe that filing formal complaints with the board that regulates this profession should also be a start. I can not imagine that every single chiropractor is a quack. Sorry, but that is where you lose my interest. A statement that is so broad tends to lose credibility with people on a professional BB, especially nurses.
I further submit that your allegations of the Boards of Chiropractic Medicine is also corrupt is a bit much too. I mean, that is like suggesting that the Boards of Nursing are corrupt. Certainly there are some Chiropractors that are honest professionals with some level of integrity!
Please remain professional in your response to us and provide facts rather than emotion. Thank you.
