Help Sign A Petition To Warn Students About Chiropractic Quackery

Nurses Activism

Published

I just wanted to let US residents know that there is a hot new petition available online to get the US Dept of Labor to remove unscientific statements promoting chiropractic quackery as a career to unsuspecting college students. Please sign the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/ajb2/petition.html and tell everyone you know (friends, family members, MDs, RNs, PTs, discussion lists, etc). Hopefully with enough support we can protect many students from wasting their careers and becoming future enemies of scientific healthcare.

I just hope the new gov here in calif does a number on workmsn comp issues. I have worked at a SurgiCenter with a number of chiros and MDs and the fraud in my opinion is rampant. I have seen patients walk in with absolutely no problems ony to have an MUA(manipulation under anesthesia) done. These two guys bring their own anesthesiologist in to give "gas". The total time in the room is approx 5 minutes! I happened to see a patient's chart to sign something a few weeks later after doing 15 patients before noon. In the chart was all the papers for billing from the center and the chiros office. The patients come in three days in a row for MUAs. The chiros were paid $2500 for each day for a total of $7500 for approx 15 minutes of time. This is down right fraud in my book. I know the state pays these guys and granted the state of Calif isn't the best when it comes to watching their checkbook, but for crying out loud somethings wrong! I don't know what else goes on outside the center that would justify such an exorbitant fee but after talking with the patients, most speak Spanish anyway, nothing but a little PT in their office. I refused to do anymore with them after that because my license is more important than getting my name on a chat for deposition purposes. I also have seen some shady things even with some MDs doing ESIs and such but these is much rarer. What I am saying is there are some very good chiros out there because I went to one many years ago and he did help some with a back problem. I just think the chiros are taking advantage of some very bad govt beauracracy and patients are paying for it with unnecssary treatment. Foe some reason the chiros make much more money on what they do than MDs. Mike

PS, the surgicenter also was making a ton of money off what they did also, just criminal in my opinion.

I've read comments by DCs that they are very unhappy that Schwartzeneggar (sp?) has vigorously enforced their workman's comp claims to save money. They expected him to do their bidding since he was affiliated with the pro-quackery ICA organization and is friends with former bodybuilder Lou Ferigno DC. Lucky for taxpayers that didn't happen.

Lisa,

..... a health insurance fraud system where everyone is diagnosed as having subluxations no matter what their complaint is.

....

I am familiar with this happening.

I am glad that there are people who rec'v relief from DC's, if nothing else through the fact that they believe that they are being helped. I do not believe that Chiropractors can cure any disease or illness such as asthma through adjustments.

In my own experience, my back/neck pain lasted just as long as it would have with no manipulations, and was just as severe (maybe a little more painful) after the adjustment. Again, my own personal experience. Maybe it's just the way my body reacts, I don't know. I am trying very hard to be diplomatic about this whole issue, seeing as how there are a lot of "believers" out there. For me personally, I will continue to steer clear of DC's, and I will tough it out when I have to, or be flat on my back anyway. Pain meds don't knock me on my hiney, usually, but I do try to avoid them, unless I absolutely cannot stand it anymore. :stone

I'm confused...Did you say that Low Ferrigno is a DC?

Also, you went to chiropractic school so you wouldn't have to pay a chiropractor's bill...am I understanding this correctly?

Wow...how did I post twice? Sorry!

On second thought I think it is Franco Columbo who is a DC not Lou Ferigno. He went to Palmer.

It is scientifically proven that chiropractic manipulation has no long term biomechanical effect. All analysis for "subluxation" have failed to be validated, subluxations have failed to pass criteria as a real disease and manipulations failed to show they have a permanents effect on biomechanics. The whole thing is a sham.

All the positive effects are easily explained as a neurological affect on certain disease conditions that has nothing to do with curing biomechanical problems or the spine.

The only thing that keeps this from being more widely known is that chiropractors keep misleading the public.

Yes that DC did manipulate me into attending chiropractic school by playing on my emotions (the crying and bill).

Let us rephrase to reflect reality: You allowed yourself to be manipulated. Please take responsibility for your own actions.

Having gotten that off my chest, I agree with most of what you say about chiropractors. They have their uses but they don't cure asthma or anything else. My uncle was treated by a chiropractor for should pain when he actually had deadly heart disease.

This isn't correct. I wasn't aware that I was being manipulated at the time. It was more subtle than that. This is the very point I am trying to make but I guess you fail to see. Chiropractors are using deception for recruitment.

It is easy to recognize in hindsight but in the moments is something different entirely. Try to see it from a naive student's point of view.

I am much better at spotting fraud now though.
