Hi there.. I hope someone could enlighten me with this..
I recently passed the NCLEX RN CA and will be taking the IELTS real soon. I'm in the Philippines and I don't have an SSN. Thus, I was informed that they cannot issue me my license. Add to that, they would destroy my file 3 years without their receipt of my SSN.
I don't have any idea on what to do next. How do I get this SSN? Am aware that they cannot issue me SSN since I'm not a US citizen nor have I ways to go there. Should I just find an agency to do all the works for me or should I apply for my visa screen? Cause I was thinking of applying for my visa screen first before I find my agency plus I will be starting work only only next month.
Can someone tell me the process of how to get a visa screen? The steps and who to contact, through the internet perhaps. I really have no idea how to do it.
Another thing is my family's suggesting to transfer my license to another state..Again, how do I go about it? Is my license needed before I can apply for reciprocity..I was thinking maybe NY, Florida or Chicago.
I'm sorry I have too many questions..I hope many could reply to my queries. Thanks in advance
Thank you for your reply,my case is, Im here in switzerland and last nov. 2007 i passed my NCLEX exam and i still dont have SSN. And my file will last until nov. 2010 according to Ca. BON if i dont have SSN.What is the best thing to do? please help
thank you
This has been mentioned several times so try the search facility and use California as key word.
But basically you are going to have to apply to another state, meet their requirements for foreign trained nurse and arrange for a small fee Ca to forward your NCLEX results. You are not able to endorse as you have no license to endorse
Hi... I've been reading this thread and I just want some clarification...
Once I've managed to get licensed in another state that doesn't require SSN, that new license could expire in 2 yrs right? And chances are I wouldn't be able to get it renewed without an SSN.
So, I could wait for an SSN issuance before I can renew my license. My license will be expired but I still have a chance to renew it anytime I want right?
Hmm...Better than taking the NCLEX exam all over again.
Licenses in most states expire in two years, there are a couple that are longer.
Some require the SSN# to renew and others do not.
I would advise that one keeps a current license in the US to make it easier in the long run. Otherwise you will need to submit proof of hours worked in another country as well as other documentation.
States have strict requirements for reactivating a license that is not current. And usually much is needed when the person is not in another state here working.
I would not do what you are thinking of or you stand a good chance of having to rewrite the NCLEX exam down the road.
VT, NM etc.
But this is what is current today, and may change. This could also be easily obtained by reading here on the forums, it is frequently discussed.
But VT has specific new requirements in place if one has gone thru CA for initial licensure and then wishes to get licensed in VT. NM is requiring the CES be completed before they will even look at an application as well.
I just passed my NCLEX. Although I'm relieved that is over, I now face the reality of finding employment in the US. I have a CA BON license because I have an SSN. Does that make it easier for me to find employment? Since I have a license number, will I be able to apply to a different state?

Sure you can apply to other states, that is not a problem. But unless you have actual work experience right now it is going to be quite difficult to get hired here. Have seen several hospitals just in the past week that were to start their new grad programs next week cancel them out, so the nurses that were to start are being left without a job.
Unemployment is now at the highest in 26 years in the US now. Americans that trained here are having issues with getting hired in many areas; you have a better chance because you have the SSN#, but that does not mean that it is going to be easy for you.
Do you have a valid work visa for the US? Reason that I am asking is that in the past, some were issued a SSN# when they were here and small and then left the US. SSN# alone does not mean that one can work here, so that is why I am asking. Do you actually have a green card or US citizenship?

Really? I'm shocked to hear that even nurses that trained there are having problems. I've been hearing conflicting stories about the employment status in the US. On one hand I hear that jobs are difficult to find in all areas and have even heard that hospitals have closed in California. On the other hand, I see that hospitals are still looking for nurses and the health care industry is not as badly affected by the economy.
No, I don't have a valid work visa. I got my SSN# a long time ago because I studied in the US for a while. I do not have a green card or US citizenship and don't really require one. I feel like I'm in the middle of a rock and a hard place because no one wants to hire without experience yet no one wants to hire a new grad so I don't know where I'm going to get the experience. Is there any visa I can work or train under first? That's another thing. Nurses can't be given the normal H-1 visa but they are not issuing the visas for nurses now. Looks like we're just stuck.

You could consider another country whilst gaining experience. Is the US your definite country as you may enjoy another. I know I wanted the US but now in Canada and staying here, we love it
The US is going through some tough times as are some other countries UK for one. All you have to do is read the various state forums or the general nursing forum and see threads there on people having problems finding work
here are some threads for starters
