Why hello there! Within the last week, I've had three patients who had unwitnessed cardiac arrests and subsequent anoxic brain injuries. And no, I don't work in a neuro ICU...yikes.
So tonight I read my Bible while drinking my favorite coffee blend, and followed it with a 15 minute run as the sun set.
My scripture focused on peace, so that's on my mind tonight. What's something that brings you peace with the hustle and bustle of nursing? A beer on the deck? A good spring rain? The ding of the elevator as you're stepping off your unit at the end of a long shift?
I like to go and do a hard workout, it could be weights, running, swimming, biking, something where I have to focus and can release energy. Then I love to make a dinner paired with wine. Something about thinking about how different flavors of food can pair with a drink, and how the flavors combine. I don't always measure exactly, as I like to add more garlic or a different spice, but finding a recipe and using it with my modifications , then enjoyong it with wine and my husband is so therapeutic.
Dogs are seriously the best. Always happy to see you when you come in the door, they do a special dance and wag their tails out of pure joy to see you. Doesn't matter what happened at work, my dog is wonderful therapy. i can be in a horrible mood and she's still ecstatic to see me when I open the door. If it's not dark out when I get home or bad weather, I'll take the furb for a walk. She loves it, I love it. I can be just a regular person with a dog out for a walk. We just moved (I bought a house) and the walking paths in our neighborhood are wonderful. Little kids are often out with their families for walks and they often do entertaining things.
Sometimes I will have a glass of wine or something. Others I will go out to dinner with non-work friends (different perspective). Still others I call one of my mentors (she's like my big sister)...we often call each other when we have horrible days as very few people really understand. And then there are the evenings I go to the gym or "treat" myself to a barre class (I can't afford to go as often as I'd like).

Creativity is my saving grace. Watching old monk, psych, westerns, reading. Being retired and working per diem after 40 years helps. My family is here for me too.
