HELLLLLLLOOOOO, Retirement !

Nurses Retired

Published

This is my first day that I can say I'm retired. Even though the first day that I did not go into work was... what do ya know?: The First Day of Spring!

So, I saw a couple of my good friends here- TriciaJ and Daisy4RN- and thought I'd come hang out in this forum a bit, relate, stir things up, cause some trouble, and whatnot.

So: When did you really feel like you were retired? Nursing has been a very big part of our lives for decades and now we have to kind of let it go; a transition, a grieving process, if you will.

I haven't received my first SS check yet and I've still got a paycheck coming from Wrongway of time worked, accrued vacation, and PTO. I'm thinking when I receive my first SS check, I'll feel retired.

Probably an oft asked question on this forum, but: When did you finally feel truly retired from the nursing profession?

Can't help but think you should have applied for unemployment and given the whole nine yards of info at the hearing that would have transpired.

It's still up for consideration, caliotter, but I do believe I am ready, as I said before, to shake the dust of Rightway Insane Asylum from my sandals and ease it on down the road!

Well, as I see it, you could have a case, but as you see it, why bother. I can’t say that I’m happy slogging around with employers. I would retire, retire in a heartbeat if I could.

And I would be right there with you!

CONGRATS on your retirement! Man, that must feel good...

That cartoon was altruistic... loved it!!

As many members here may know, my "retirement" at age 55 was not necessarily voluntary, but it happened and I'm glad to be out of the rat race. But I didn't really feel retired until I put my nursing license in Retired status last year, which made me realize that my career really was over. It was kind of sad, because nursing was a huge portion of my life for over 20 years. And now people are talking about bringing back retired nurses to help with the patient loads due to COVID-19. (But I've been out for six years and they don't want anyone who's been out for more than three.) Wishing you every happiness, Davey! Enjoy!

I was eligible for SS on my 62nd birthday, over a year ago. The fact that I would be making money without working was sinking in. Granted, it would not be enough to comfortably live on, but I've lived on less and have had to scrape to get by, but I knew it was doable.

"Imagine that", I said to myself, "not having to go to work!"

I drew this cartoon one week after I turned 62:

I gave it a total of 57 weeks before I decided that I needed to retire!

Congratulations! Looks like you're a Tigers fan!

Well, 2BS, actually back in the '80's, I was a fan of baseball. And Magnum PI.

My first and last names start with the letter "D", so Detroit's seemed like a fitting cap to wear.

The closest National League team is the St. Louis Cardinals, so I followed them predominantly. And living in Illinois, the Cubs were the next team I closely followed.

In 1985, I did, however, drive to Kansas City to watch the 1984 American League East champion Blue Jays play the 1984 American League East champion Tigers.

I played some ball, too.

Although I never was really any good at it:

Thanks for the compliment, Daisy. Yeah, if Tom Selleck was only a Detroit cap and a mustache, I'd look exactly like him!
