Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

I found my therapist through a friend's high recommendation. Ask around ---if you are inclined. That really is the best way to find someone who is a good fit for you. And once you do, make a verbal/written pact with that person that he/she never say what he/she thinks you want to hear....but what you NEED to hear. Believe it or not, there are a lot of "feel good" people out there and I went through a lot of them before I found mine.

GOOD LUCK.

hello everyone! :nurse:

don't have much time. just wanted to pop-in and say "hey" and hope you all have a great day today! errands to run before i can post at length. will read the thread at that time. it's a nice sunny day here in tx, so going to enjoy it. worked out for the first time in years last evening, and i feel grrrrrreeeeaaaatttt today! i'm going to continue my workouts with dd -- who is a fitness buff by the way -- and former gymnast. her bf is a personal trainer, too.........so how can i not workout living with them. :D they are my inspiration to get my body in shape right now. of course, i want my body in shape more than anything for me...and not for anyone else, but it sure helps to have that kind of motivation around me. i've got to give myself lots of kisses and hugs today. :kiss :icon_hug: i'm proud of myself for the progress i am making in my personal life. that will surely motivate me to begin growing as a professional as well. think i'll throw a party for myself the first ten pounds i drop! i've got at least thirty to lose.......for starters anyway. :D

well...gotta go get ready before dd returns to pick her ds and me up to run errands. be back later. meanwhile, prayers to all who need them today, for those who've already asked for them, and for those who are in need of prayer -- yet to shy to ask. here's a hug for all of you. :icon_hug:

Hello everyone.

Renee, glad to see you on.

Deb, I almost forgot to thank you for the ham recipe. It was the bomb! I ate a slice too many though.

LOL you make perfect sense Tweety. So do you Renee.

I am off to my therapist today -----he is wonderful for my emotional health. I can't believe the strides I have made in just a year. I am so much better-off than I was last Christmas. Mental health has been my biggest issue all my life...and eating follows.

I was reading Psychology Today, and they have a website for finding therapists. Mental health has been my biggest issue for my entire life too! So I see a therapist in my neighborhood who specializes in all the things that are wrong with me! Do you think it is crazy to go to a therapist recommended by Psychology Today? Tonight I made a turkey meatloaf with the recipe on the cover of the Quaker Oatmeal box. It was so great-my husband and I finished the whole thing with just a side of steamed broccoli. Does anyone really post their recipes on this site? Krisssy

I thought I'd post to tell you about my new diet breakthrough:nurse:. I call it the "No diet -diet". All last year I stressed about my weight, ate barely nothing, and worked out like crazy. I'm not at all overweight (5'8, 125lbs). I just became obsessed. I realized that I was trying to control my weight because my life was so out of control at the time:o . Well, I didn't lose much weight and I was constantly hungry! So within the past few months I went on a new kind of diet, a healthy diet. Basically it consists of three balanced meals a day. I eat a lot of frozen lean cuisine meals, lean pockets, and soup. The difference is that I allow myself treats whenever I want them:chuckle. But instead of overloading, I just eat a small portion. I actually find that when I allow myself to eat the foods I want, I don't crave them and I few bites is enough to satisfy me! Last year at this time i was only eating very low cal foods, but then I would binge on treats. Now I feel that I have found a healthy balance and a healthier lifestyle

CowsRGreat, that is awesome. Good luck in your healthy endeavors. When you starve, you change your metablism so your body actually conserves fat and calories and you don't loose weight. The way to loose weight is to eat...go figure. I think you're also understanding what some of us are finding out about ourselves, it's not just about food, but there's an emotional componenent as well.

Kat, I know exactly what you mean. I've never done well on diets of restriction. What I like about the diet I'm following is that it keeps me full, so I have no cravings, and there's enough variety. I went to a church last night and there were all kinds of goodies at the coffee area, I was able to get my coffee and say to myself "I'm not really hungry right now, so I'll pass". But if I would have said "OMG! TREATS! I CAN'T HAVE THOSE", I would have eaten a plateful.

Krisssy, people indeed have been known to post recipes on this site, if you think it's something we'd be interested in feel free.

Renee, kudos on the workout girl!

I survived day #3 of my diet yesterday. Off to the gym for a workout today and hopefully to yoga tonight. I think I've decided to keep it simple the next three days at work and just get some South Beach Diet tv dinners, or some Lean Cuisines (they seem so small) for my lunches at work. Working 3 back to back 12-hour shifts is going to be the biggest challenge of this diet.

CowsRGreat, I can relate to being obsessed with my weight. I too have tried starving myself in the past but no more.

Tweety is right, it will throw your metabolism off. If only I could be as disciplined as he is with his eating, excersice and all. He is am awesome role model for me here.

SOMEONE brought homemade chocolate chip cookies to work - I thought we were through having goodies at work.

It has been hard for me to restart healthy eating - yesterday I went home and ate chips and salsa for dinner.

Good job Tweety - send a little of that motivation my way.

Good luck to everyone.

Tweety....thanks for the encouragement! I go again tonight to the gym with dd. She goes FAITHFULLY three times a week for one hour and 15 minutes each time. That will give me one hour on the treadmill to continue building up my strength and endurance, and also getting the heart rate to take more and more each time. Once my heart can take the increased activity, I'll have the personal trainers at that gym add more to my workout. One personal trainer worked with me Tuesday night. He set the treadmill for me according to my age, weight, and pre-workout heart rate -- which was 93 by the way :uhoh3: He told me not to allow my heart rate to exceed 120. Well...it did a few times....up to 126. When I would see it climb above 120, I would walk a little slower until it came back down to 120.

Just that one time of working out made me hunger for more because I was such an avid exerciser back in the day. Depression over marriages that were deadly for me made me lose all sight of my "whole self'. Won't let that happen again. I am learning to be a "whole person", so the only type of man that would interest me now would be a man who is also "whole". Know what I mean? :)

Good luck to you..........and all the others on their "healthy living plan" for the present. icon14.gif

For brkfst, I had one boiled egg and a small cup of cinnamon applesauce. For lunch, I had a chicken, broccoli, cheese rollover (dd eats them, and so I'm going to eat them too since she says it's good for my body and all). :D Afterall, she and her bf are the fitness trainers around me. :)

Is it bad that I'm thinking about ordering a Pizza for lunch? :chair: :sofahider

It's only "bad" if YOU think it's "bad". Do you think it's "bad" to order a pizza? Moreso, do you think it's "bad" to eat pizza since after you "order" it, you'll be eating it? Why do you feel guilt when choosing a certain food to eat? What or who makes you feel guilty about what you choose to eat? :)
