Health Insurance

Nursing Students General Students

Can anyone give me ideas on health insurance. I am a new nursing student and had to quit my full time job, so I am now without insurance and it is mandatory at my school. I applied for Blue Cross and they actually denied me. I have two children who are insured with their dad. I am running into a wall.

Your college likely offers student health insurance so you can get in under a cheaper group rate. Call the student service office and ask :). Good luck!

health insurance is mandatory, or is it ? You can call private insurance agencies to see if someone represents a co that will insure your health. You are looking for a "general agent", who is not tied to one company but has various companies he/she represents. Look for a big deductible so the premium will be less costly. Your school may have a list of options (there is someone offering student coverage online, but I don't know the site). I worked full time and went to nursing school part time in order to keep insurance (and income!), but if that is not an option for you, I think you can find what you need by making some phone calls.

Health insurance is mandatory for us as well. Luckily, we're covered for a relatively small price through my husband's employer. Did you look into trying to find a high-deductible, major-medical policy? That would probably be relatively inexpensive. Check with your school's health department, they may have information about student policies. I know there is one company that offers affordable coverage for students, but the name escapes me at the moment. Maybe someone will chime in with it shortly.

I had to get low cost insurance also. My school suggested a company called Sentry.

It's really cheap but it only covers about $10,000 in costs. I pay 32/month. A 25-34 yr old only pays $25/month. It covers summer also. You pay for 4 months at a time.

I hope this helps.

good advice....also inquire with the financial aid advisor, if you have one, as some students where w/o health insurance and she knew of companies to contact.

Fortis also offers a student select insurance. It is basically major medical and will cover doctors visits for illness, injury, etc, but not for routine stuff like physicals and vaccinations. I believe their webiste is http://www.fortishealth.com the coverage and cost varies by state, but I have it and it was less than $1000 for the entire year. Oh and one good thing about it is that once you get it you keep it, as long as you pay your premiums, even if you drop out of school or graduate.

I looked up Fortis. They won't insure any student over 30 years old. :uhoh3:

If you are in school full time and unemployed, does your state offer a health insurance plan? If not, there is always Medicaid. I also need insurance and am over 30. It's going to cost me roughly $2300 a year for insurance (with my daughter on the plan). That's ALOT but, it's one of those, HAVE TO HAVE things. I think it's crap that Fortis only extends insurance to 30 years old at a lower rate-talk about age discrimination! Especially since my $2300 plan is with them!!

Great advice here. I hope you find something soon. Our school requires health insurance also.

Also, don't forget to save your checks or receipts for what you pay out-of-pocket for your health insurance. It is deductible if you itemize your taxes, something almost every non-traditional student should do, as books, tuition and uniforms are deductible as education expenses. We get back a bundle each year from itemizing, due to our health insurance and out-of-pocket healthcare costs (I'm diabetic, and even with insurance, spend a fortune with co-pays on drugs and doctors).

Good luck!

I had no insurance and the college made me purchase it from them. It is $350 for the whole year. Maybe you could ask the college. I also had to buy the insurance for the RN program. It was only $25 for the whole year.

Can I ask how old you are?

Thanks!
