Have you ever had a pt and her spouse have sex in their room "to get things going naturally"?
We had a couple come in that had had intercourse that am, stimulating contractions. Her cervix was changing but then stalled out around 7 CM. The mother to be's sister was gaurding the door. Her nurse went to go in to the room because the central monitoring was showing a decel. When she approached the room the sister stopped her and told her what was going on.
To make a long story short it sure enough stimulated contractions, her water broke and delivered precipidously and the nurse delivered as her doc was in the OR.
In our busy unit with all our experieced and long time nurses said it was a first for them. Would love to here if you have had a similar experience;
We're not talking about submarines here, people...it's semen.And to add, as I volunteer on a postpartum floor, if I walked in on a couple "getting busy", I would die of embarrassment right on the spot.
So yeah. No submarines, please.
For sure! If my hubs had tried getting his submarine aboard my Titanic he'd have hit the iceberg nose first!
What I immediately thought of is cleanliness. There are hospital germs and such. Plus, does seamen have any bacteria? What about a man's p___s? After all, isn't he handling it all day to go to the bathroom? LOL
I couldn't help myself.......isn't he handling it all day.......

too funny...
Why not do that before you come into labor and delivery...,..
There are other ways ms. granola!:lol2:

they probably did do it before coming in, in fact I believe the OP did say the couple may have used this method to start labor. And while there may be other methods, I would much rather have sex than end up under a knife or with pitocin-induced contractions! I am am by no means a "granola" type person.
No, semen does not have bacteria and if the water wasn't broken, then no big deal! Or is the lady parts sterile itself during labor?!?!? I think not!
Well in my opinion, pts should be able to do whatever they can naturally to have a drug free and surgical delivery. In this case what they did was highly unacceptable in a hospital ( time and place for everything ) if this was done prior to coming to the hospital then fine no harm done.
Also I think they are one of the few couple's ( if any other ) that would be intimate like that under the circumstance, yeah it was obviously done for the purpose of recreation and not procreation, but I still don't see much people resorting to that method on a wide scale I mean time has change its not 1492 so of course there are much more effective methods and ways of doing things.

Then you'd be surprised to find out a) how many OBs/midwives recommend this as a way to kickstart labor; and b) how many people take them up on it. Regarding the last bit, 'newer' does not always equal 'better'. Sex releases endorphins as well as oxytocin. And as already mentioned, there is the prostaglandin factor. All 3 can help relax a cervix and/or speed things along in a stalled out labor (say, Mom gets to 5 or 7 and stops). No need to resort to other more painful methods of getting there.
In the hospital, if this were my pt, I'd close the door and come back in half an hour. That's just me. Obviously not talking about a high-risk or a pretermer here, just so we're clear.
