Has anyone taken these two courses together during a summer session? Am I crazy??

Published

I am thinking about taking both A&P I and Chemistry during the first summer session. I am taking A&P II second summer session. If I don't do this, I will be left with just one class to take during the fall, and I will have to wait an additional semester to apply to the nursing program. Has anyone done this? Am I crazy for even considering it?:uhoh3:

When there's a will there's a way. Are you working or have any other obligations.

Personally I think it's totally insane, but I understand your motivation.

I totally agree with Tweety....I am glad that I had Chemistry before taken A&P, made it easier when discussing metabolism, muscle function...it can get very molecular. A&P was a hard and demanding class during a regular semester, my head is still spinning

But more power to you if you choose to take both during the summer.

Good luck ;)

I would not encourage anyone to take Anatomy and physiology and chemistry in the summer. Most schools, I know chemistry is a prereqs before you can take A&P. In the summer of 2004, I took chemistry in 4 weeks. It was brutal. We did more than 4 chapters a week. I could not see myself taking anatomy at the same time. It just too much information and you really not learning. A&P 1, you will do 15 chapters, chemistry about 22 chapters.

For me.. chemistry was time consuming. I did take it during the summer.. by itself. Only you know your schedule.. however keep in mind that most schools accept students based on grade point average. I started my journey last January, beginning with Biology.. then did Chemistry in the summer, AP in the fall, taking Micro now, and will take ap2 in the summer. I am so glad that I took bio and chem first.. saved me lots of tears.. did it add time for me? sure, but in the long run, it may have saved me time.. since I can skip the waiting list (I already have enough points)

Do you work? have a family? If not.. then I might try it, if I had a strong bio/chem background. Good luck with your decision... enjoy the learning journey... (fun2care taught me that!)

How long are your summer sessions? Summer classes are very intense and with classes like that your generally can't have much of a life outside of class. I took and A&P class a couple of summers ago and I even dreamt about it - seriously. I was dissecting in my sleep and visualizing all the muscles, bones, etc.

I agree with others that, while it's entirely possible with enough effort and motivation, it's not a great idea. Chem is generally a pre-req for A&P to better understand cellular-level stuff. You really want a strong grasp of all these things (beyond cramming it in your head long enough for the test) before you get into your med-surg classes.

Best wishes however you go :).

Last summer I took physiology & pharmacology together in a 8 week semester. While it wasn't the funnest 8 weeks of my life, it wasn't horrible. I was still able to travel and have a social life on the weekends and work 40 hours a week during the week.

At my school chemistry is not a pre-req for A&P. It might be helpful to take it before but I think it would be okay to do it together. Most schools let you drop your classes and get a refund a week or two into the semester so maybe you can register, try it out, and if it seems to be undoable drop one of the classes.

I am actually taking A&P 1 and Chemistry together. I'm making A's in both classes so it's very do-able. What you will come to realize is that you will cover the Cellular level of organization in A&P and shortly thereafter, you will see the same concepts in chemistry and it gives a lot of understanding. Just don't concentrate on one more than the other. You must figure out how to spend the same amount of time studying each-well you might want to spend more time on the bones and muscles when you get there!!!!

I took those two together last fall. Even in a full semester, it's hard. But it can be done! Just keep your focus and minimize distractions.

I agree with all of these responses! Anything is possible, of course, but I can't imagine taking both of these courses together, especially in a summer session. But hey, motivation is key, and if you want it bad enough, and are willing to work for it, then do it. I took Chemistry during a summer session and then A&P in the fall, and I found it to be very much to my liking. Having had Chemistry first made some of the A&P information much more understandable.

I TOTALLY agree ;)
