Has anyone failed the NCLEX with the computer stopping at 75?

Published

Yesterday I took the NCLEX and it was the weirdest test. The content and the material they were questioning me on had nothing of what I studied for or learned in nursing school. I did Kaplan, Uworld and countless questions online before going in for my test, but non of it was helpful I feel like. Did I get lucky and guess 90% of the test or could I have failed with 75 questions. All my friends are telling me I probably passed, but I am stressing big time. Can anyone shed some light on my fears? Thank you all.

I took the nclex for the first time in june and failed at 75 questions. I used kaplan but did not really utilize it to the best of my abilities. I left feeling like I passed but failed surprisingly. I rushed through the exam and almost 65% of my exam was management and priority so I assumed I did good. I did not have alot of sata and I remembered being anxious when it shut off at 75.I too had nothing that I was familiar with,no ekg or dosage calculations either. I retest tomorrow and plan on giving it all I've got. Good luck!

Thank you, wow, now I am very anxious and can't wait to get my results hopefully tomorrow.. I guess 75 is for sure passing is not true  ...although I know the test is different for everyone.. Take your time and try to pick out little words that make the answers incorrect, that's the strategy I used since I didn't know most of the answers.

I was convinced I failed when my test stopped at 75 q, but I passed. I did not feel confident in my answers at all. How did you do in school? A huge percentage pass the first time, so try to keep that in mind! I know this is an insanely stressful time.

Thank you, it's horrible the feeling..but now I have 50/50 answer, 2 replies, 1 passed with 75 questions and the other didn't pass with 75 questions... thanks, I really wouldn't know how else to study for this test, if I don't pass, I will just go again, because all the studying I feel like didn't matter. I did good in school, A's and few B's, but non of it would matter I feel like. Thanks for your reply.

You're welcome! This time around I will definitely take my time and focus on what the question is asking me.

The first time I took the NCLEX it stopped at 75 and I failed. Worst feeling ever.

Happens all the time. It means you failed it good! The computer was able to determine with a minimal number of questions (75) that you cannot possibly pass.

If you are wrong and you did indeed pass, then it also means the computer was able to determine with a minimal number of questions that you are minimally competent to practice nursing!

I passed at 75 questions! When the computer stopped, I felt my heart drop into my stomach. I would have hit the computer if I didn't think it would have put my results on hold. I was certain I had failed, as it seemed so hard. The NCLEX is a tricky beast -- it can stop at any number of questions, and the actual difficulty of any given question can be greater or less than any given test-taker's perceived difficulty. Still, the majority of test-takers pass the first time, something to the tune of over 80%, regardless of the number of questions they received. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

In my opinion, it is very unlikely for a graduate that did very well in school and studied adequately to fail at 75 questions. You would have been given more questions. Failure at 75 questions would for graduates that barely passed nursing school (or cheated their way through), the questionable for-profit schools, and according to other threads on this subject IEN nurses where English is not their first language. Your probability of pass/fail has more to do with your performance in school and your preparedness for the test.

I hope you passed! but in case that isn't the situation don't be discourage. I to felt the same way when I took the nclex for the first time in July. I went to the test and wasn't familiar with majority of the questions and failed in 75. I was using Kaplan as well. That experience showed me that I needed more brushing up on content. I used Hurst (expensive but worth it) and found out on Monday that I passed in 75 question.
