Great metro areas to work in the U.S. Today?

A lot has changed within the past few years with the economy continuing to turn for the worst, healthcare changes, and the demand for nurses as an effect from it. I will be graduating from nursing school with a BSN and I'm single looking to leave atlanta for just a change of scenery to work. Where do you recommend? Among some places I find interesting are NYC, Miami, Houston, and Chicago, any other well known big cities are welcome as well with pros and cons for all. Thanks.:yeah:

Personally, I don't see what's so great about Mariah Carey.

Screw the cities, come on out to the country!

I know even the economy is getting worst health care jobs wont be affected.

Mariah Carey is the QUEEN. Are you insane to come for such a Goddess!!!! One of the best selling female artist of all time! She has the voice and the music for any mood your feeling, she snatches every single female's toupee and wig effortlessly. She is definition of music. Praise the queen! ..... And I don't want to leave the U.S.

No no no, not out of the country... come out TO the country!

Fields, trees, animals, long straight roads, you know everybody, you can pee in your backyard, and the only airplane noise you have to worry about is the cropdusters!

That's boring I prefer smog, pollution, long commutes, and seemingly hourless days stuck in traffic to get to the market down the street

Try New Mexico, The Land of Enchantment! You can have all the hassles of big city living in Albuquerque, and the challenge of working with the Native Americans through the Indian Health Service. Just don't tell the Native Americans that Columbus "discovered" America or you may be treated to a very close haircut.

Or West Texas! El Paso is about 3/4 million and across the river Juarez Mexico is over a million. The largest metropolis straddling an international border in the world. From El Paso, on a quiet night, you can hear the screams of the victims in Mexico. Lot's of interesting cultural events, again don't claim that Columbus "discovered" America. Winter sports are 2 hour drive North. In any case, wishing you a long fulfilling career.

I'd support making Mariah Carey's birthday a national holiday.

Mariah Carey is an exhibitionist.

In truth, you just need a change so it really does not matter. Have you considered travel nursing?

Columbus did not discover America.

I live near St. Louis and love it. The area I'm in has three of the top 100 cities (Money Magazine) in the country...St. Peters, O'Fallon, and St. Charles. I like the sub-urban living coupled with being close to the urban attractions. Forest Park has an excellent zoo, science center, history museum, and outdoor theater (all free admission but you pay for extras). Plus for a young single, I hear there's good nightclubs...I've got four kids, so it's been a while since I was out that way!

There are many hospitals in the metro area, although I'm not sure what the market is like for new grads. SSM and BJC are the largest systems here if you're interested enough to look at job listings.

Cons...high crime rate in certain areas, bad air during the summer, and unpredictible weather. Also, not the best public transportation system.

Just want to go on record - I have no opinions re: Mariah Carey :lol2: but I am very pro-Houston!

As a new grad, you will need to carefully consider the likelihood of getting a job in that great metro area. Houston continues to be in growth mode but the central/urban hospitals are not hiring as many new grads these days. Suburban & community hospitals are still hiring.

We have plenty of traffic, some incredibly long commutes, occasional smog, no state income tax, affordable housing & the best shopping anywhere.

New Grad a year and a half ago, came to DC, live in northern virginia and commute into DC to work. Lots to do, tons of museums and sight seeing, pretty decent nightlife, lots of shows/theater/entertainment etc, very active area with soccer/softball/kickball leagues and tons of other activities
