Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.
Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.
Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.
Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

I know! I told myself I would have my articles (I can almost hear Tokmom scolding me since she has been preaching that all along!) ready by now, but I have been so busy doubling my classes and we have been gone for several days that I haven't gotten to it yet. I will start working on it ASAP!

I never did either, lol But I don't work, so wasn't overly concerned....then I said to myself...what if I had just found and read like 4 articles a week for a bit..just 4,lol But I say that to myself each week....what if I had just done a bit of work on the paper each day....instead of doing it all on Sunday! I'm doubling up a few weeks here and actually in my case found it better, as it focuses me.....no focus, my mind tends to wander and makes excuses!
This goes for everyone..ensure u are saving ur work in multipl places.... I send mine up to Hotmail (outlook) One drive up in the cloud! save..save..save!!

Great advice for all of us! It is so appreciated too. Couldn't have made it this far without all of the encouragement and advice. I plan to stick around here so I don't loose all of my online friends!
LOL, I had to laugh at your comment! No scolding, lol.
As for the instructors, ours was great because she had a TON of templates and examples of how the papers should look and she was quick to grade, so you had your grade on one paper before you started the next one.

I wish I had listened to you!! Good thing I'm not working right now so I do have more time than usual. I will have to get right on it first thing tomorrow! Wish me luck!
Ok I have been snooping through Capstone that I am about to start tomorrow. I have not seen anything out of the ordinary as of yet. The prof (one not on the list) does not have anything crazy posted, only to watch the deadlines and look at the grading scale. What should I be looking for? Maybe it's too early to tell if I will be lucky with this one or not. Still wanting to gamble on it though. I just want to be done!
Okay now that you have actually spied the syllabus maybe this will make sense. Read my post in the other thread from April 5 that starts out "Here's a tip for those of you starting Cap."

I know everyone works at their own pace and has their own process for organization, etc., but I know (for me) if I had done it this way I would have saved myself a barbaric week #2.
I agree with tokmom about the Prof we had - the templates of previous Cap papers were a huge help because I'm a very visual person. What the assignment descriptions stated vs. what the templates she provided actually looked like were not similar! So if I would have gone with my ever-so-literal process and followed the descriptions word for word, it would not have looked like what they actually expected. But that's me. Good luck derk, it's right around the corner! Woot!

I love advice like that!! I read through it and can see what you mean. What a great help that will be! What would I do without this forum??
I was dreading this class too, but now I am really looking forward to it. My co-worker said it is super easy and she actually found it interesting despite the fact she is not religious. I am officially on break until Aug. 25 and Spirituality will be my first class when I start up. An easy transition back in.
I am not religious either but the class was one of my favorites because no CLC, and topics were interesting. There was a book? I don't remember it. There was one student that gave her 2 cents about her religion almost to the point of bashing others. I think she walked a fine line of being rude and disrespectful of others but in a passive aggressive way. The instructor would always reply to her with a compliment and then tell it the Christian way. interesting... but easy class no sweat!
If it makes you feel better derkfamily, I am NOT doubling up on classes and I start capstone in September. I don't have a PICOT question so therefore, I don't have any articles. I guess one reason I don't have my PICOT is because I am not sure if the project is my own research or just on others research. My head is spinning....FlamesI know! Has the list been updated recently? Can I add some of my instructors to it?
I can't believe how fast this program is going by. I am actually 1/2 way done, just started spirituality.

Hi jj, I can answer that for you!
As BSN students, we are not in a position (qualified) to do any research, so the short answer is: Your Cap project is finding research that others have already done that supports your proposed solution to a nursing problem. I, personally, think they ought to change the verbiage in the course to searching†from researchingâ€, it is confusing.
You see an issue in nursing in general, come up with a PICO where you basically wonder if we did it this way instead of that way, would it turn out better?†Then you go on the search for what others have already found out that a) supports your notion of the problem you identified, and b) shows evidence that what I'm proposing may change the outcome. My PICO was about the discharge planning process, and with the readmission epidemic these days, I wondered if we interjected an insurance nurse (me) into the process, to collaborate with the hospital DCP staff to assist in the process & get pt's set up for a smoother transition to home, would their readmissions be reduced? I have access to a whole planet of information that the hospital CMs don't have, so my assistance is valuable. The insurance nurse would also follow the pt's telephonically for 30d post-DC to circumvent any issues they ran into (inability to make f/u appts, couldn't get their prescriptions filled, no transport to appointments, etc., which all cause readmissions). So my research†was obtaining articles that confirmed readmits are a ginormous problem (affecting cost, patient health, etc.), articles on WHY readmissions are so high (the pitfalls/barriers pt's experience), articles on the effectiveness of DC planning itself, articles on the effectiveness nurse intervention during the post-DC period, etc.
The PICO should center around nursing; what the profession of nursing can do to improve a current patient problem. I saw a lot of students coming up with PICOs that were about medicine in general, and the prof had to keep redirecting them back to nursing.
Get on those articles!
