Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Published

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

Oh nooooo, aimeedarling, that toad! Those things he chose on the CLC agreement are intended to be extras, not in place of the research and the work! Is he going to get a grade on the project itself? He created an outline and left himself off of it? That’s so not fair. I’m in class 5 now (stats, UGH), so have 4 classes with CLCs under my belt and I agree with everyone here – take the lead. It’s not fair, but somebody has to do it, and if you don’t and it turns out sub-par, that CLC project grade can absolutely have an impact on your final individual grade. And yes, the slackers count on that. Regarding the fair distribution of work, what I have always done is take the actual written assignment, put in on a Word Doc, color-block the assignment out into 5 different parts (or 4, depending on how many ppl are in your group). The assignment, as it’s written, usually has 4 or 5 fairly clear parts to it (ex: “State the history of your subject, explain how the focus area…, Identify ways to….,” etc). This serves as the outline. Post/attach it in the group forum and tell ppl to pick a color. I’ll take green, Susie takes yellow, etc. I also learned (trial by fire) that some people don’t read the rubric and compare their assigned part to it… So I’ve started copying/pasting the rubric sentences underneath the color-blocked piece that pertains to that one. Hope that made sense, it has worked very well in all my CLCs so far.

I have two questions. About how much of the reading do you guys do? I'm a super slow snail reader and i haven't been getting through all of it. I am more of an auditory learner anyway and I don't feel like I'm gaining much knoweldge.

Secondly, how do you evenly split up the labor in group projects? I completed my first group project and it went pretty good but one of the guys in my group just signed up to create the outline and make sure every one completes their tasks. I didn't think this was fair as the majority of the project was placed on two students shoulders. When I politely presented my concerns to the group I got no responses and then the CLC was turned in and there was no going back. I might be too sensitive, but I think if you're not going to edit you should at lest research and write. What do you guys think?

I don't do much of the reading. I skim some of it to maybe use in my papers. I am just finishing my 8th class, and I still don't feel like I am gaining any knowledge. 4 classes left. Let's see if that changes at all.

Reading?? what is that? I look what is required for the DQ's and paper and like Jrich, I may skim over some of the reading, but spend more time researching online.

Exactly!! There is just way too much stuff they want us to read. I just do what I need to to get everything completed and am done with it.

OH now way!! Don't let anyone get away with that again! EVERYONE does research...period.

We have always divided that up. Pandora and I usually edit together so we don't take on any more than research and editing.

OH, two more things. Yes, the CLC can be changed if need be. Nothing set in stone.

Secondly, call me the odd man, but I do 85-90% of the reading. It really depends on how much I need to learn. Patho wasn't that difficult for me because I had taken a certification class, so this was a lot of repeat. I read very little. However, in the ethics class, some research and especially in these leadership classes I AM reading quite a bit. I actually find much of it interesting, as well as their links they add, very informative. I have learned some stuff I would have never have not known if I hadn't take the time to read.

I told myself I wasn't going to whiz through this program just to get it over with. I was going to read, and take my time learning, and I have. :)

Thanks everybody! I will keep that in mind for my next group project! I don't want to do extra wok for someone else's degree so I will take the lead. Good to know that tip about the rubric/assignment PrismRN.

I think for the reading I will start to cherry pick and read stuff to complete the assignments and also things that I find interesting. I don't want to learn a lot of things if I'm spending all this money!

:)

I'm surprised at the # of people that don't know how to use MS Word or Powerpoint!! GCU does offer free online tutorials for them!

You were lucky you were able to join up on projects! I know a few times people have asked--and the prof said nope!! Doesn't hurt to ask though

Group projects can be somewhat easy if you get the ball rolling and people do their part!

I'm just happy no school until march 31st!!

That was my next question, have any of you taken the tutorials/webinar? Thinking I need to do the powerpoint one.

I did the three day tutorial where you have to submit "assignments" and answer DQ's. It's all pretend of course, but it gives you a good feel of what Loud Cloud (LC) is like.

As for APA, I had a friend send me a template of a 6th edition paper and I also read up on APA. I still find myself over at Owl Purdue looking up the finer points (and some major ones, lol) but I have come a long way.

Powerpoint: Be VERY comfortable with it. There is a ppt in almost all the classes. Make a pretend one and be familiar with how to do the notes, and know what size is preferred for font, etc..

I had my teen kids help me with the first one. After that, I was on my own, lol.

When do you start?

By the way...I ordered my nursing pin and it arrived. I wasn't going to open the package until after graduation or the submission of Capstone. However, curiosity got the best of me.;) and I snuck a peek. It's so pretty, but do you know what the best part is? It says BSN! When I get tired of writing these last papers (because Pandora and I have both hit APA walls and are weary) I pull out that pin. It motivates me to sit my butt back down and start typing.

I started a few weeks ago :) I am already tired of writing and you guys said this is the easiest class! :banghead: I did the LoudCloud tutorials, it helped a lot. I was able to find and submit things without any hiccups. I also purchased PERRLA and am loving that program!

Sooo cool about your nurse pin! I can't wait to be at the point you are!

Oh! i didn't realize we got a pin! My ADN one was stolen :(
