Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Nursing Students Online Learning

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

Anyone have an awesome leadership professor? I'm thinking of doubling up during the Christmas break period with Spirituality. We have a trip planned for my nieces graduation which happens to fall during my capstone class unless I double up…in which case I would be DONE before the trip and we can celebrate our BSN together! Please pm me if you have any tips on who is or isn't a good instructor. Thanks!

You guys all seem so supportive... hahaha. I look forward to asking for help.

Got my grades for week 2 and the first paper...... UGHHHHH! She dinged me 50% for my participation.... WTH! I had my 8 discussion posts that are at least 3 paragraphs long (except my primary posts which were around a full page), and I log in everyday for one reason or another. Keeping the green group organized and together has been a challenge.....

So what did I miss? Put a individual discussion post to her and waiting for a response.

On a better note, 96% on the paper..... Can't tell if she graded hard or not, nothing to compare it to. I am hardly never happy with my papers when they are completed. I am usually hard on myself.

My stats instructor was very critical in participation grading. I connected outside of the GCU frame with some of my CLC group and this was something it seemed everyone experienced. When questioned on the points deducted in the "questions to instructor forum" the response was "refer to the guidelines". This was the only class I have ever been deducted participation points in as I'm in my 6th class right now. It's so frustrating when you have an instructor that gives vague feedback leaving you guessing as to what they are looking for.

I was told I only needed 11 classes because I had already taken statistics. I have the option of testing out, but my SSA (who I'm actually not a big fan of) said for financial aid/loan reasons it is better to take the 12 classes so you aren't docked down to part time in the last "semester". She said I could take an easy class at the end or decided to test out later. Right now she has me signed up for AMP-450V Leadership and Vocation as my last class (Not nursing leadership, because I'm signed up for that one too).

Oh gosh, that would make my blood boil . I really can't stand when a student asks a question and instead of answering the question the instructor diverts them. It is zero percent helpful. Are you still in this class kwmom?

Rob, are you posting your participation on three different days? I know you said you log in everyday (meee toooo), but if your participation posts aren't spread out that might be why you were dinged.

If I post my DQ1 on Monday, DQ2 on Tuesday, and do my participation on Wednesday and Thursday I am not meeting the participation requirements. These need to be done on three different days.

Did she leave any comments about it in the gradebook?

I had a teacher who was dinging me because I wasn't using references. Even though she said we needed to substantiate our posts with references or clinical experiences, she didn't really mean that. It took me until week 4 to get with this unspoken program. I just think since the grades are for participation, it is silly to be required to use references. If I was sitting in an actual class room, my participation wouldn't include an APA formatted reference. It would probably draw on my personal experience. But, I guess that is just my thinking, and not the GCU RN-BSN reality.

You can always try asking her about it in the individual forum too! Maybe it was a mistake.

Thank goodness that class is over. Currently in research where the instructor is very interactive and helpful. Huge difference.

I try to spread things out over 4 days. I know I only need 3 but it is broken up evenly over 4 (sorry, OCD). I usually post my two initial posts on Monday and the rest of the week I reply to her conversations and/or reply to other posts. Haven't heard from her yet, but I will update.

I shouldn't be so uptight because I still have my 'A', but it could be a better 'A'. I am working on next weeks initial posts and DQ 1 is super long.... Nearly 950 words including 3 references, but it was necessary to be thorough. Will she ding me because it is so long????? Bawahahaha!!!!

Her specific comment in the grade book: "Great work with participation throughout week two. Thank you, Mrs. H." Okay sooooooo why only 50%.....

Going on to DQ 2.

BTW, does anyone use Google Chrome in AN? I just switched from IE, because I just got tired of the problems after the new browser updates, but am having problems with the text editor in AN and applications such as quote and edit functions. Anyone have a solution for this? Anyone know where to find a solution to this? Does AN have a tech support department.... Hopefully one that is better than the tech support department at my facility...

This doesn't even make any sense to me, I don't blame you for being befuddled. Does her class Announcement give specific directives for what she considers a substantive reply post? Obviously you got the number right (with 8 being >6), so she must be docking either for content or the days of the week they were posted. I've never gotten dinged for participation, and rarely do I go over the 6 required responses. What did she say exactly in the "Comments" section - under the `Reports` tab, `Gradebook`, `Participation`, View Comments?

Please let us know the outcome, any tips/hints always help us all.

You sound like me in that maybe you're spending too much time in LC (I know that sounds silly considering you just got dinged for participation LOL), but try to get a life/LoudCloud balance worked out now while you're still early in the program. I used to log on several times a day (okay I still do, it's a hard habit to break - there might be an Instructor question I need to read! ha), but I literally used to read every single student DQ/reply. That itself, while interesting, sucks up soooo much time. Think about if there is an average of 22 students, that's close to 200 posts per week you're reading. I used to think I "wasn't done" if I had any unread posts... Now, my unread posts may linger around 75-90, and honestly, on Sundays, I go into each thread, change the view to "linear display", and wipe them all out at once so I can start fresh for the next week. I just don't need to read them all. I go in, read a few, pick out the ones that I might want to answer, copy/paste them over to an open Word doc I have running all the time, and write out my replies to 6 of them. This way you can "do" all 6 in one day - then, on 3 different days of the week, I paste 2 back into the forum. I don't go back anymore to see if somebody commented on my comment, or if the Instr asked me a direct question. I found that really nobody was "participating" as much a few of us, yet we all still make it through. These days, I simply use all those hundreds of posts as potential material, go in and grab 6, find something to say, and then doll them back out on spaced days
