Going green makes me red in the face

Published

If I get one more email or anyone from management continually talking about going green, carbon footprint, save the earth, blah blah blah - I AM GOING TO SCREAM!!!!

All I want to do at the start of a shift is print up my list of patients and recieve report. Can't do that now...its online only. Seeing as I go room to room without the computer and i have not memorized the patients names, what use is that for introductions and reference?

Go Green, Climate Change, Green this, Green that

Let me tell you something: The only green i care about has pictures of dead presidents on it

This is somewhat related but not really : The OBSESSION with organic food/trader joes.

Am I the only person who sees this as insanity? Its a recession, nobody can afford the basics, gas prices rise by the hour and people shop for Organic food because its "healthier"

Another news flash: Your choice $4.00 for a gallon of milk or $7 for a gallon of milk? Organic veggies all came from the same place as non-organic veggies.....in the earth with cow poop!

You beat me to it with the CFL/mercury comment. Though I guess I'm screwed because my cat knocked over a lamp a couple months ago & the CFL shattered. And you can sure bet I didn't do anything like that to clean it up.

If you notice any paresthesia, burning pain, emotional disturbances, or itching contact your nearest health care professional. :D

I actually only buy organic milk since it takes me forever to drink a gallon of it. They use ultra high temps to kill bacteria in it rather than pasteurization. This extends the life of the milk by at least a month. Saves some money!

Gee, I wish my hospital would try to be just a little more green.

Each staff member get 4 sheets of paper, only 1 side printed, but half blank, at the beginning of each shift. Many don't use them, so they get tossed.

IV tubing is often not dated, so it will get tossed after 1 use.

Pt gets a pacer in EP, they use tubing for NS and ABx, then toss instead of sending with pt to floor, even though they will get 3 more doses of ABx.

Pt transfers from ICU with MDI, insulin pen no pt label. They get tossed because no way to verify who has used it.

Pt food nearly inedible, most goes back uneaten and family brings in food.

We use those blue packs of wipes from the warmer, but once they cool down aides don't want to use them and get another pack. When pt is discharged or transferred,2,5, or more packs, each missing 1 or 2 wipes get tossed.

In the olden days, when a patient was transported their nasal cannula went with them. Not any more, you get a new one a every stop.

But, we get our hands slapped for using too many warm blankets or pillows.

Sheesh

You know why organic food is expensive. It's because the usual crap sold in stores is produced by companies who receive huge subsidies from the government.

Not buying organic because it too expensive to support your local farmer is sort of like buying import cr@p at Walmart 'cuz it's too expensive to buy American made.

My husband found a mercury thermometer at a local thrift store while we were shopping together. I was so excited. (he was proud)

....Did I just write that I was excited about a mercury thermometer?

PS. I was still in it's original vintage packaging.

I agree with molsLPN about the organic milk, it lasts way longer than normal milk, which for people who don't drink a lot of it, saves us more money than having to buy regular milk every week because it's spoiled my the time you want to use it. I also like organic meats better because they're hormone and antibiotic free. I've had friends who's daughters are well developed by age 8 and their pediatricians say it's because the growth hormones put into chicken are making kids develop younger and more rapidly.

However I do agree that organic veggies are a sham, rinse them before you eat them and you're fine. bananas for example, all the pestisides are on the peel, which you don't eat! Plus many organic farms are next to non organic farms, and the chemicals get blown onto the "organic" foods anyways. and now i'm done with that rant!

So they won't let you print out a patient list, unless you work in a nursing home and have 40 patients, can't you just use a PEN and PAPER and write down their names and info you need yourself, or maybe look at the computer before you go into their room, so you do know their name? Just sayin...

Going "Green" is business speak for cutting cost.
Exactly. Business that talk about going "green" don't care about the environment--it's about the bottom line. I have no problem with them wanting to save money, but to lie about the reasoning just gets to me.
