Given a do over, which (feasible) career would you pursue?

Nurses General Nursing

The question is in the title. And pertains to actual work.

I would have traveled to other cultures and done some DWB type thing but I still would have picked nursing. I probably would have pursued NP or WOCN (might still do that). I would have liked to have added some ER or critical care type experience.

I've been surrounded by friends and family who do work they enjoy, I have a lot of builders in my circle who love the work but may loathe the paperwork amd bureaucracy (I'd think there was something wrong with us if we didn't, apologies to lawyers ? ).

And also if I may, why did you choose nursing?

Violinist and violin teacher. I went into nursing because after conservatory training i allowed my parents to convince me that no one makes a living in the arts, blah blah blah. I hated nursing ever since my first day job-shadowing.

tomorrow is my last shift as a nurse! :)

One of the guys I went to school with was into violin. Always wondered if he followed it into a profession. Looked him up online and could not find his name, so guess he never became a famous musician.

Specializes in Critical Care.

What are you going to be doing instead? Did you find a teaching job?

Specializes in LTC, med/surg, hospice.

A friend suggested nursing to me. Before that I was really just interested in biology and wanted to do research/science writing.

Nursing is my do-over.

Specializes in Acute Care - Adult, Med Surg, Neuro.

Veterinarian, veterinary technician, or botanist. I've found nowadays I like plants & animals more than people.

Congrats, that's awesome! My younger son plays violin and loves it! He talks about combining playing with whatever career he chooses, which so far has ranged from pro basketball player to engineer, and I always cheer him on. If he wanted to try and make a career of it, I'd support that too, but maybe that's because I personally know people who do make a living in the arts. I hope your orchestra experience is all you want it to be. :)

Specializes in MICU, SICU, CICU.

Coast Guard Officer, Linguist or Translator for a Federal Agency.

Still nursing, but a different career path.

In retrospect, I should have gotten my CRNA after a few years of working in ICU. Instead, I went to L&D, then took years off to be home. When I returned to work, went into Home Health because of the schedule being more family-friendly for us. I enjoy Home Health, but think I'd also have enjoyed the challenge of being a CRNA, and the salary would be much higher. At this stage of my life, going back to school isn't feasible or worth the financial cost, plus I don't have the recent hospital/ICU experience required.
