Give up patient care - how long did you last?

Published

How long did it take for you to give up (most) patient care responsibilities and move into a more administrative role? How many years did you last in the patient care mix?

Did bedside 3 years and admin for 12 so far :)

Does your username in any way describe what kind of nurse administrator you are? lol Just kidding, of course! lol :o

23 years. Never push a bed down a carpeted hallway and assume your 'helper" is doing her 50%.

Boss showed up at Comp hearing and LIED. Adjudicator told everyone to leave the room and told the lawyers they were wasting her time.

I chose not to take Comp. (stigma you know) but SS and my pension retirement on medical grounds.

I'm about as wealthy as the stray cat down the block.

Now I administer breakfast and supper, write bills, and weed the flowerbeds.

25 years and still at it. I can't wait to retire. My "I care" is running on low. All too often now I feel as if I am on stage when caring for a patient. I guess I've had about enough.

I am right at the three and half years and really ready to get out. We get treated like crap by management.

no breaks, unsafe residents and blamed for their mistakes.

I feel like I should get paid extra to teach them.....if they listen.

4 years in critical care

I am almost at the same amount of time in critical care. whats up with that?

maybe there is some 3-4 mark of burnout.

Specializes in CVICU, Obs/Gyn, Derm, NICU.

Too embarrassed to say .....

However I will say I'm actively working on another line of work (self-employment) and

will do a nursing cold-turkey when the money comes in.

I am 8 years in and the only thing that has saved me so far was travel nursing so I could change units and sub-specialties. Now, I'm looking at another 2-3 years, MAX - just so I can finish schooling on a masters and move away from the bedside. I stopped travel nursing and signed onto a really kick ass ICU unit that will make these next few years nice, but the next job I take will not be working bedside.

jollydog~Pretty close to my situation! and I totally agree with your reasoning.

I'm almost at 4 years, and had an interview last Friday for a nurse coordinator position. I'm a fit 28 year old, and my back is killing me.
