How long did it take for you to give up (most) patient care responsibilities and move into a more administrative role? How many years did you last in the patient care mix?

29 years in med surg. No desire to be a boss. Love my 3 12 hour shifts. Not at all interested in 5 days a week! the only thing I would change would be to drop to 24 hours a week. Would love to do that but I have to carry the med and dental insurance for my family.:heartbeat

I've been a nurse for almost 6 years and have yet to do bedside nursing. My first 4 years were a mix of private duty home health and medical offices. I've been a school nurse for almost two years.

Almost 2 years. 6 months Med/Surg, then 15 months ER. Now moving into Case Management. Will retain my ER job on a PRN basis in order to keep my skills and get my adrenaline fix as I need it. :)

Wow - precisely the same amount of time as myself...
23 years. Never push a bed down a carpeted hallway and assume your 'helper" is doing her 50%. Boss showed up at Comp hearing and LIED. Adjudicator told everyone to leave the room and told the lawyers they were wasting her time.I chose not to take Comp. (stigma you know) but SS and my pension retirement on medical grounds. I'm about as wealthy as the stray cat down the block. Now I administer breakfast and supper, write bills, and weed the flowerbeds.

Wish you took the comp, bump, the stigma....you payed for it and it belongs to you. In this day and age, we need to work till 70 in order to stretch out our retirement income...the comp would have done that for you.
I realize, you already made your decision but someone else may think otherwise if ever faced with the same circumstance. Peace!
25 years and still at it. I can't wait to retire. My "I care" is running on low. All too often now I feel as if I am on stage when caring for a patient. I guess I've had about enough.
Dag, you summed it up so succinctly! My feelings exactly. I absolutely love being tucked away in my office. Don't have to pretend, anymore....just realized I am getting more crotchety and cynical these past few weeks. I hope it is just a bad month, which I am having and not age...I really used to be a nice person and loved nursing...but not so much anymore. Anyway, thanks for sharing MY thoughts!
