My mother recently had an ablation and wants to send her nurses a gift. What did you enjoy receiving the most? What limitations are there? I think it cannot be expensive and no fresh flowers...am I right? Thanks for your help.

Food is usually appreciated. Something like a simple fruit tray would be appreciated. Where I work we get a bunch of cookies, which I love, but there are some that prefer healthy snacks.. Fruit is quick and easy which makes it great.

^^^ this! Acknowledging the nurses by name and copying management and/or patient relations will go a very long way!

I definitely agree with the giving acknowledgement when it's due!
I will say though, I've had 3 different patients have flowers delivered to me at my workplace to thank me and I loved it. I don't get flowers delivered to me very often so it was not only sweet, but it was a huge surprise.

Whatever you do, please remember the odd shifts. By the time the 11-7 people get in, a daytime food tray has been pretty much picked over.
And I don't know if I'm the only who feels this way, but ... naming names (even for positive praise) leaves many un-named staff who do things quietly and are not seen by the masses. Like an 11-7 nurse who ensures that a needed IV med is avail for the 7-3 shift to administer often goes un-recognized for that effort. That 11-7 nurse had just as much a part in the wellness/successful care as the other 'named' nurses.
Things like that happen all the time which makes for a T-E-A-M effort, not just individuals. But I do know it sure does feel good when someone DOES recognize an individual effort.
Thank you for thinking about the staff.

We've had some pts/families send packaged food that was labeled for each shift so it wasn't all gone by the time night shift got in.

What amolucia said! My unit gets a lot of food gifts which is great, but off-shift RNs like to eat too. One family had pizza delivered, and it was all dry by the time I arrived at 2300.
Does the unit have a Keurig? If so, an assortment of K-cups would be a nice gift. (It would be easy to find out--just call and ask.) Or an assortment of teas would work whether they have a Keurig or not.
I personally love cookies and chocolates (not that I need them haha!!), but a fruit and/or veggie tray is tasty and beneficial. One family gave us a mix of popcorn -- the butter, cheese, and caramel all mixed together.
A sincere thank you card is a wonderful pick-me-up, but I would address it to the whole unit. Nursing is a team effort, and there may have been some who helped your mother by helping their colleagues assigned to her.
All my best to your mom!
