Hi everyone. I have OB clinicals starting next week. I am so scared that I'll throw up when I have to do a cervical check. I really, really, really don't want to do this. Please, give me some advise. I'm nervous and really scared.

I've had 3 kids so I know what to expect, for the most part. And I DO NOT WANT TO!

We weren't allowed to do cervical checks in my program. I don't have any advice, but I do wish you luck!

I hate to say it, but you are really, really going to have to figure out how to get over it.

Adult nursing isn't my "thing" as I plan to work with babies, but when I started nursing school, I knew that this was going to be the deal, and it was going to be my job to get over it, at least while I'm in school.

So far I haven't snapped yet over anything.

If you are going to be working with adults in your career, there is no guarantee that you won't come across someone that needs to be checked lady partslly or rectally for different reasons.

We are allowed to do cervical checks in our OB, but only for patients that were known to be progressing normally, no issues with placental placement, etc.

We weren't allowed to do cervical checks when I was in nursing school. But if you have to, bring the trash can over to the bedside so if you have to puke there is someplace for the emesis to go instead of on the patient.

Changing a perineal pad was my personal rubicon in OB clinical. Lets just say the job got done....

We were not allowed to do any cervical checks in our OB rotation.

I would venture to guess that it's a rare OB clinical that allows students to do cervical checks. One reason for this is that many OB units are trying to reduce the number cervical checks overall. Another is that it takes many attempts to become proficient at this skill and that isn't going to happen during a clinical. There is so much else to see and do and learn about.

Why don't you ask ahead of time whether this is a part of your clinical or not. You might be stressing for no reason.

Our instructor has been telling us for the last two weeks to be prepared for OB clinicals because we will be doing assessments on mom and baby and cervical checks every time we have the opportunity. I'm in an LPN program, is this really something I need to know?

O, I never got to do a cervical check when I was on my OB rotation...I figured it was because I was never at a lady partsl birth, just to C-sections and the rest post partum...a lot are writing that they were not allowed to...why not? When do you get this training? (I am going into OB when I graduate) is this an orientation thing when you get hired? I am doing a preceptorship this summer...did anyone get to do cervical checks with their preceptors? ( got to feel cervix in my beginning midwifery class, but that was just us students...not women in labor so it was NOT the same thing!)

I never did a cervical check and I was in the middle of everything I could do. I have three kids that I watched be born, so it really wasn't a big deal for me. I really enjoyed the vag births. One pt's husband left the hospital to run an errand and I stood by the pt's head and coached her through her birth. It was amazing.

Check with your instructor about doing cervical checks, you may not have to do them.

Good luck!

I hate to say it, but you are really, really going to have to figure out how to get over it.
