I've always been attracted to people's behavior and attempted to understand why they behave as they do. I have a theory here:
A definition of melting pot is "a place where different peoples, styles, theories, etc. are mixed together" and that's why I believe General Nursing is a popular forum. It's a potpourri of nurses, spanning the entire spectrum of nurses and nursing.
What do you think?
Why do you come to the General Nursing forum?

IMO people behave the way they do primarily because of how they were raised, their life experiences, and the things they have witnessed. I'll give my own personal example of my ex, a solid abusive narcissist. I have cPTSD because of that loser. When I encounter people who have similar characteristics to him, I shut down and try to avoid contact and conversation with them at all costs. Certain things trigger me and since I've been free of him over the years I've had time to reflect and recognize those triggers. If I have to interact with people like that, I remain calm and keep it as simple as possible to avoid unnecessary drama or allowing them leeway to trigger me into reacting. It's been a long process but I'm getting better.
As for why I come to the gen nsg forum, it's to learn, laugh, give advice, and interact with people who can understand what my gripes/good times are as a nurse. Non-nursing people in my life don't understand. It's the small things like the nagging daughter who keeps wanting you to medicate her mom so she can go to sleep before she leaves but mom, the patient, is telling you she's perfectly fine and to ignore the daughter. Or the Google nurse who knows everything they've read online and have zero clue what they're talking about so they're driving you crazy with bad attitudes while being loudly wrong. Or just any of the umpteen thousand scenarios we all see in different locations but are eerily similar yet someone out there understands exactly what you're going through that keeps me coming back.

Your insight and coping mechanisms are extraordinary, NurseBlaq. I also sense you are a person of higher consciousness who uses their good sense of humor to deal with stressors.

This brings up the topic of Nurture vs Nature. I too, was a staunch believer at one time of people being the result of outside forces and their subsequent dealings with those stimuli. And I continue to believe that concept to a point.
William Wright wrote a book Born That Way which focuses on behavior being the result of a predisposed genetic template. A whole new perspective was presented to me and I applied that concept to those I felt and believed I knew well. I must admit, I now believe our behavior is more so Nature than Nurture.

I hear you. There is a certain camaraderie and fellowship in this profession that I can't, and don't wish to, shake. For example, I feel a certain closeness to my virtual artists/friends on the comic website, but nothing like that which I feel with my virtual friends that are, or were, nurses.
Our relationship is a good example, in that we can seriously discuss nursing topics in one instance, and and be playful in another.
I love that.
Thanks for your submission, NurseBlaq!

It's a great way to waste time, and it requires little to no attention span. It takes me two weeks to watch a two hour movie, but I can handle a sentence or two (most of the time).

The general nursing forum is probably the only one allnurses actually needs. Otherwise, I've always felt it is too cluttered with sub forums.
For example, I tried being active on the ER section, but it doesn't have much action. It's nowheresville.
If allnurses wants to kill a thread, just move something to its 'proper' category, then have a funeral.

General nursing forum is the first one I check when I come to allnurses. You definitely pointed out why, the diversity of the posters and topics. I enjoy reading about different experiences from new grads to crusty ole battleaxes. I enjoy hearing about people's experiences in different specialties, regions of the country and world, it's all very interesting to me.
As Emergent pointed out, if you have a thread moved to it's proper place most of the time it might as well have been deleted due to less traffic.

Oh, I'm going to have to call you on this weak lemonade you have served up, Sour Lemon!
Your passionate persona comes through in your posts which are direct and filled with wisdom, with just a touch of cynicism, and are masterpieces of prose!
"A great way to waste time" my eye!

Unlike Sour Lemon who has a need to copy an entire post in order to answer it, I usually copy only the pertinent information on which to focus.
But your entire post, Emergent, every word, rings true and reinforces my perspective on reality.
All I could do would be to say the same thing in different words.
Speaking of saying the same thing in different words, I usually stop reading a thread, no matter how interesting a topic it may be, when members doing that like a bunch of redundant robots.
Okay. I ranted. I'm through now.

I read TMIML's post three times, so I don't have a need to copy it here, for once again, another expressed my perspective in their own words.
I doff my proverbial hat to you all.
I hate the pile on threads. Some hapless soul says something awkward, or their comments are misinterpreted. Then, someone starts picking them apart, and everyone else follows suit. It goes on for pages and pages with the original poster being torn to pieces by a hungry pack of wolves.
If the original poster tries to clarify their thoughts, it is totally ignored and the angry mob carries on with their tar and feathering.

While NurseBlaq sits there in the dark, watching the drama, downing popcorn!

I originally came to AN because I was actively searching for nursing websites bc I was really getting disillusioned (ie sick and tired) with nursing and all the crap we are expected to put up with. I was looking to see if it was just me/my workplace or widespread as I had already job hopped and it didn't help. It was nice to read that others were experiencing the same thing and that it wasnt just me, the area I was in etc. (misery also loves company I guess LOL). I just read for awhile before joining and posting. I like the general forum because of the mix but I also peruse around at times.
