I was on night duty the other night, sharing spook stories with other nurses. Just wondering how many of you have seen ghosts while on duty?

Any to share?

Thanks brissygal

There is a big thread on here about ghostly goings on. I have seen things though. Twice now have had the whole ward smelling like roses or lilies when a patient died, it was beautiful.

I'll have to go looking for that thread, I've never seen anything but I have had an expereince that I am still not sure if it was my imagination or something.

Bit of history first, I worked in ICU and we had a long term patient (a kiddy who had a RTC and needed home ventilation so she was with us for almost 6 months) she used to wake up in the middle of the night panicking and she always told us that the man in black was there and usually the nights she had a nightmare a patient on the unit died. I had never nursed her but we had all heard the stories from the older nurses on the unit, it had become a bit of a folktale and noone really believed it.

Anyway, I was in ICU looking after a pateint who had been extubated that day and was off his trolley (very very confused and mostly incoherent)

I had to go and take some blood from his A line and while I am stood by his arm he looks at me directly in the eyes, then over my left shoulder and says hello nurse, the man in black is here, just by the side of you but I don't think he's come for me yet so I'm not too worried.

Cold shiver and asked him to repeat what he had said to which I got incoherrent ramblings. I am sure the temperature dropped but then again it could have been my imagination, we didn't have a death that night but there was one on the early shift. Probably unrelated........................................................................................................

I do remember one night standing in the old surgical HDU talking to someone who was sitting down behind the nurses station. We were talking away and I heard someone walk up, right behind me. I paused and turned to say hi to whoever it was assuming it to be a colleague...there was no one there but I distinctly heard footsteps which stopped literally right behind me. That was a bit disconcerting.

Years ago in a small hospital where I lived and worked a woman put on her call light and when we went to see what she wanted she asked us to close her drapes. We obliged and then she thanked us saying "I saw the angel of death looking in the window." Very serious and matter of fact..................................................................................................

An hour later a patient in the next room passed....................... needless to say we were all a little spooked!

Happy Halloween.

Last year there was another thread similar to this one that had hundred if not thousands of replies.

To the All Nurse staff is there any way to bring that one forward or link it to this one? It was really a good one.

I was rotating nights on a med-surg floor, the furthest room from the nursing station just happened to be the only empty room on the floor. About 11PM the phone in the room started ringing but by the time I got in the room it had stopped. Not familiar with the floor much at night I finished my rounds and went to chart just as the other nurse also was charting and mentioned the phone. She looked at me a little strange telling me the phone couldn't have rung, ALL phones in patients rooms were cut off at 10P! Now I had a mystery. A couple more weeks I again rotated nights, again the phone rang but the regular night nurse was there at the time. The story on this room was so far, every patient for the past month in that room had died, the phone started ringing every night the same time the last patient died exactly 11P one month ago, if answered there was no one on the line! *gasps*

I think the thread is called "Best Nursing Ghost Stories" or something like that. It's a long one and a good one. I'll see if I can find it and bump it up.

I found the thread about ghost stories. It may be what you were looking for.

Once had a lady who was actively dying from CA. Her eyes were darting around, she whispered... "there's Jesus".... pointing above my head. She said "open the curtains so he can come through". So I moved the divider curtains in her room and she took her last breath minutes after. I take care of lots of hospice pts and see this sort of thing fairly often. Just to be able to see what they are seeing and know what they are realizing would be amazing. But I'm willing to wait 50+ years!
