Best Stethoscope?
I've worked postpartum for 10 years and recently upgraded to a cardio III. While I agree with Klone that you are not diagnosing defects, the cardio III is great because I don't have to use two stethoscopes. I hated using the pede stethoscope for the mom. I would say about 10-12 of our staff bought the cardio III, and everyone loves it. It is a heavier stethoscope though, so just be aware of that. I like that it has a higher acoustic rating as we get a lot of c/s, gyne surgeries and recently medical off services. All in all I recommend it highly!!

Postpartum hemorrhage kit
We stock Hemabate in our fridge as well, although we're not using it as much anymore. Now that you mention it, we do have sterile gloves in our kits as well. They are not elbow length but they are the longest gloves we have on our unit. We do manuals in canada, just forgot about them! Elbow length gloves would be nice for "fishing clots out of the toilets" which i think is nasty.

Is the birth rate down? or are we just slow

NRP resources?
where internationally? I wasn't aware you could do NRP online... as for where to study from, your educator should hand out books. I try to ensure everyone has a text to study from at least 2 weeks before the class date. http://www.cps.ca/English/ProEdu/NRP/index.htm thats the website for NRP in Canada. Fairly similar, we just made a few changes.

On-call at home and police wake you up?
This is probably the funniest thread I've read in a while! Hilarious! I'm not saying its a bad thing... I just think its funny. We've had no shows on our floor a few times. Noone has EVER mentioned calling the police. I think its more because the staffing on our floor is so ridiculous that people who are marked down as working often aren't. Next time... I'm SOOO telling everyone we should call the police. ha ha. its actually a smart idea, i'd be mortified though. I only have a cell phone and the other day my bedroom had no electricity (lovely little marvel that had the electrician stumped for hours, the rest of the house had electricity). I was supposed to work in the morning and as my alarm clock only works with electricity, my cell phone was my alarm... it died in the middle of the night. luckily my sis was working that morning and woke me up... My floor never would have been able to get a hold of me... I think it is GENIOUS to send the cops after a dr not answering his pager... I can't count the times that we have had to wait hours and hours for a doc to call back. Once I had a postpartum going into a psychotic state and i called the on call psychologist over and over, house, cell, pager, no results. I finally had to call the head of psychiatry and he called the psych who FINALLY showed up hours later. Ya... thanks for playing buddy.

Any nurses out there still wearing a cap?
I've never seen a nurse wear one in real life in my hospital, however I do work with a nurse who could retire any day now and the only thing she tells us is that we'll all know it's her last day (including our boss) when she comes to work in her nursing white's and cap!! I'm pretty sure she graduated mid to late 60's

how many of you go to the grocery store after working with patients?
I've lived for the past year with numerous waitresses. I can't count the amount of times that they go to work coughing hacking nauseous etc etc etc. They are not allowed to call in sick and are serving food. At least when I go to the grocery store I know that I can wash all my food myself whereas at a restaraunt who knows what the staff are passing onto us...

Questions....
I agree. 24 hours.

Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.
ha ha I was in a patients room and an internist came in and told her that exact thing. Said there was nothing they could do unless she lost weight. My preceptor student and I left the room holding back our laughter. Mine would be... Your doctor is the scariest man I've ever met in my life, I can't believe he delivered your baby without killing the both of you... run, don't walk, away from him screaming at the top of your lungs. FIND A NEW Dr!

Do YOU answer call lights in a hospital?
I absolutely answer them! First off the sound is freakin annoying, second off your patients are needing you. I work postpartum so a call bell could mean a choking baby, a hemmorhage, patient passed out. I just can't imagine not answering thinking its not my job:nono: Patient care IS my job.

What's Your Best Nursing Ghost Story?
I don't have any stories though i've heard some from friends. I'd LOVE to get all these together and write a book. Fascinating. My friend was in nursing school a couple years ago and she worked at an extended living facility. She worked a lot of nights and one night she had a patient who was not doing great. they checked him earlier that night and he was asleep. a few hours later the call bell went off so they went into the room to discover that he had died at least an hour or so before. Turns out the place has its own resident ghost. The facility is actually the old hospital called St. Michaels. It was run by nuns many years ago. The hall where this resident died has many different stories about a nun coming in and sitting with a patient etc. my friend said she once saw her walking down the hall and it freaked her out.:scrm: The coffee machine will turn itself on and make a fresh pot of coffee even though noone is around. I've talked to the senior nurses on my floor that worked in the old building before they were moved to the new one and they told me that similar things had happened when they were there. Fascinating, but never happened to me. :[anb]:

Stories of the craziest patient you've ever had?
I had another patient who was a gyne surgery who wouldn't get out of bed to walk. She had stayed in bed for almost 24 hours and was complaining of gas pain, and was fairly non compliant and combative. I went in there and explained the reasonings of why she needed to walk. she told me she is always walking and never in bed. she said she'd just walked (which i knew for sure she hadn't) so i told her she HAD to get up and go walk or the gas pain was gonna get worse. Funniest thing ever. She started to act like a 12 year old (she was in her 50's) and so she listened but as i was at the door she screamed "fine I'll go for a walk you fat b@#$% whore!" (there were a few other words too) i just turned to her and couldn't help laugh a bit and told her to enjoy her walk. Needless to say i let someone else help her back to bed and when i went back an hour later she was back to her normal self. I almost wanted to consult psych.

Do you always have an RN waste narcotics with you?
I always get someone to watch, occasionally they'll just sign and walk away, but when I'm watching I always watch.
