Hi everyone!

I need info regarding PCT to patient ratio on days on your tele floor.

Ours is 10 or 12 to 1! Is this comparable to you out there?

Thanks for your replies in advance:)

ours on nights is 16 to 1. days and evenings at least 8 to 1. no extras if there is a 1:1.

We don't have any on our floor. Only nurses. I wish management would let us have some, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Days might get one very infrequently when they are short staffed.

on tele, I've seen 11/14 to 1...on my floor, at max it is supposed to be 14 to 1...(ortho/neuro), although I've had 18 by myself before....go figure...

Specializes in Med/Surge, Psych, LTC, Home Health.

Anywhere from 12 to 1 to 24 to 1 on my floor. I really think that is too many patients in an acute setting.

Specializes in telemetry.

3-4 to one on days

4 to one on eves

5 to one on nocs

Often without an aide 1900-0730 (72 bed unit)

I dont know how you all do it. Our facility often takes transferrs from other facilities because our Pts are often too sick for what they have to offer. I spend my whole 12 hour night shift running my butt off as do the rest of our staff. Ratios are still an issue in my facility.

Specializes in Pediatric/Adolescent, Med-Surg.

when I used to work on a tele/med-surg floor I typically had 13-20 pts on evening shift, and 20-37 pts on nights. I know work on a floor where I have 13 pts max. :)

You poor nurses! What horrible shifts you are working. Surely you are killing yourself - a painful and uneccessary death! To have the responsibility of so many patients in your care. Why haven't you all moved to California - where the ratio of 1:6 or 1:5 is law.

I take my hat off to you all - and simply think you all deserve a medal!

I am a PCA on a tele floor on nights. The ratio is 15-19 patients for 1 PCA. During the day there are usually 2-3 PCAs for the same number of patients. It really makes me mad sometimes because the acuity of these patients is high and I can't always keep up the way I should with the total care patients and it bothers me. I do have to say though my nurses at night are the best and help whenever I ask and sometimes even when I don't.:nuke:

Specializes in Cardiac/Tele/CVICU.

The last two hospital floors (different hospitals) I've done my med/surg rotations on do not use PCAs/aides. Nurses for everything.

Specializes in Acute Care Cardiac, Education, Prof Practice.

12:1 on days and nights up until 11 unless we are heavy on level 4's.

Day shift could easily use a third PCT, but cutbacks aren't making that a possibility.

Nurse ratios are 6:1 at night and 4:1/5:1 on days.

Specializes in Critical care nursing.

I work on a PCU. step-down from ICU, which is different from the unit you work on, I think. Anyway, since we are considered critical care our ratio is 6:1. In Jan we going down to 5:1.
