Hey nurses,
In honor of "420" tomorrow... As a health-care professional, what are your thoughts on smoking weed? Any nurses out there that smoke a joint here and there?
Cheers.

I am careful to consult experts as to what strains are beneficial for someone with my mental health issues and leave the rest alone.
This has become a really interesting part of my NP clinical. Because it's legal to purchase here it's become fairly common among my patients (or they're more likely to disclose it now), and I've introduced a lot of them to the word "cannabidiol."

I'd think very carefully before risking a license to practice nursing. Even in a state where recreational use is legal, until it is legal to use it recreationally at the Federal level I'd abstain. All it takes is a surprise UDS at work if one has a work related accident, or a narcotic count being off and everyone being asked to test. Then the Board of Nursing gets involved. The latter situation starts a runaway train that not one of us wants to be on.

Nah. Smoked a couple of times in college and didn't enjoy it. It surely wasn't wonderful enough for me to stress about drug screens and an encumbered license.Besides, as a PP said, it stinks. Stale reefer smoke makes me gag.

Oh thank goodness . . . I was starting to feel all alone.
I honestly do not understand the draw with marijuana. As I mentioned, it was not something I thought was oh so wonderful that I'd be a regular user.
And I don't understand the folks who think it is less unhealthy to our system than alcohol - unless you are abusing alcohol. There are even some health benefits associated with drinking wine.
But pulling SMOKE into your lungs is less dangerous than a glass or two of wine?
I don't think so.

Well, personally I don't drink or smoke (now that is just plan stupid) or do any type of narcotic, but only because I don't like the feeling. I do not understand why it would do any harm in smoking a little as long as it is out of the system prior to working. It would be no different than drinking when off the next day. I live on the border of a legal state and my hospital does not drug test except in the case of an accident or just cause. Someone mentioned that a hair follicle test would show past use. That may a concern for those who would lose their job if it they have ever consumed weed, but not for those who would lose their job only if working while under the influence.
In the spirit of 420 day, a co worker and I are talking about splitting a special cookie on our first day of our 3 day weekend.
Oh and I've had those brownies as well . . . they taste horrible.

I would never risk my job or license for something so trivial.
That and I wish all my ETOH patients were doing THC instead
Otherwise, I don't care what substances responsible adults ingest responsibly

As a licensed RN I would/could not recommend it. They can pull your license or you end up in an expensive state board monitoring program. I read about it in our Nurses In Recovery board all the time. It's enough to convince me, healthy or not, MJ is not for me as long as I want to be a licensed RN. All it may take is one random drug test at employment to mess things up. Simply not worth it to me.

I would not personally indulge, as I recall from the days of my youth it was not a pleasant experience. Either way, as many are saying, the anxiety over the possible consequences resulting from a positive drug screen would rule it out completely.
I've never tried anything edible with it in it. How about the cookies?
