I agree with many of his points actually. However, I will take issue with the intellect bloviation. Intellect need not have to relate to choice of career. Unless there exists some literature that states physicians are intellectually superior, I will call BS on his assumption. I will agree that physicians will typically have superior education in science and actual medicine.

I have absolutely no idea how to respond to this. "How come nurses either failed to be admitted to medical school or didn’t try?" Excuse me? This is so offensive and sad. I'd like to see a doctor who has this offensive view to be in our shoes on the floor for a day or more. I would love for people who are not even in the medical field and have this view to do the same.

He's on Fox "News" -- which is not exactly at the pinnicle of journalism. The people on that network are often paid to be provocative, to stir up controversy to stimulate their ratings by saying inflamatory things on purpose.

The good thing about this guy is that people who know truth can now see how bogus Fox is as a "news network." Hopefully, they will stop watching Fox News -- or at least stop believing the b.s. broadcast there by people who can't get jobs on legitimate news shows.

i'll concede that prolly 100% of the interns i come in contact with have a better grasp on science based knowledge than i do (considering that they spent the last 6yrs of their life studying it). however, as far as just plain common sense...well that is often a different opinion.

Seriously, though, the man if "full of himself" and thinks docs are more than human. Sad.

There's no need to react one way or the other to this article as he is doing the age old "comparing apples and oranges". So, the whole article is basically meaningless verbiage by someone who sounds like he is trying to prove something to himself.

When everyone does their job they are trained and experienced enough to do, and within their own scope of practice, then the patients will always win out. If we argue amongst each other about who's smarter, or who's "knows" better, the patients will suffer.

While I may not agree with some of his assertions...

The statements in this thread that put down psych as a profession / specialty are really doing the same thing as Dr. Ablow did in his article. Why stoop to his level? You can make your point without doing so.

I'm not a nurse or doctor, nor am I studying to be either one, but a big part of what I am studying involves understanding the role, background, and training of various patient care providers. I have to say that article was one of the rudest and least informed rants I've read in a long time; in fact, it was so rude and uninformed that I actually found myself laughing at a few points. The bit about doctors having a higher raw intellect than nurses? Nope, sorry, thanks for playing....

I just imagined him delivering it in person, complete with flecks of spittle flying as he ranted and ended up with a case of the giggle. I actually found many of the comments far more depressing than the article. However, there was a gem fairly early on about no one wanting to grow up to be a nurse and how doing so would be like wanting to join the arena football league rather than the NFL. That one was just so asinine and out there I started laughing again. Seriously? No one grows up wanting to be a nurse? Priceless.

I know I am just a naive nursing student, but I am truly saddened by this article. I guess I have not had the exposure to the seamy underbelly of medicine that is backbiting and infighting amongst MDs/RNs/NP/PA (and apparently even more so between female MDs and RNs??). I personally HAVE dreamed of being a nurse my whole life. I didn't want to go to medical school because I didn't want to lose 7-12 years of my life on schooling alone.

Maybe some of this is rooted in Male=MD and Female=RN...women choose nursing so they can have a family, and men choose medical school because they can have a family later/now with less time commitment?

I think the convenience of achieving higher degrees online is very appealing, but I do wonder at the discrepencies between schools. The MCAT is the MCAT no matter what. Yes, we have an NCLEX and other boards for specialites, but maybe it would behoove us as a profession to have some standardization in entrance requirements, entrance testing, and nursing school curriculum. But maybe that spirals off into a 4 year BSN vs. 2 year ASN conversation....

I hope he remains very healthy all of his life. He may some day find himself in need of an intellectually inferior female nurse. :p
